Imports aad Exsius-ta. It la now more than a year since this phenomenon, which had at that time not been witnessed since IO. first reappeared. During this period, beginning with. Juna of 1WH. eight out of the fourteen months have reported a larger Import than export move nent. What la more impressive still Is the fact that the balance for the eight completed monthg of 1910 falls on the Im port aide. This la something which haa not hajrpened In fifteen years even In the sa..,e eight months produced an ex port surplus of no leas than l&fcUOO.OUb. It will be suffic ient, for the moment, to direct attention to the main facts, which the figures seem clearly to estabiiHh. One is. that the for eign exchange position cannot very well be normal, under such conditlona; the other, that prlcee for commodities In general must still be on a basis which puts us at a disadvantage a compared with the"' out-, side world. As usual on a Saturday there were no new features In the trade. For the week re ceipts foot up 42.S30 head, the largest run, aa noted yesterday, since IDOZ, when a rec ord of 44.OU0 head was made. It might be added In this connection that while the record for cattle waa not broken thl week the total number of oars of all kinds of stock waa . the - largest in the history . of the market. In spite of the large run of cattle, the market as a whole ha been In very satisfactory 'condition, although prices have worked somewhat lower. The demand for range beef steer ha been very good throughout the week and the beat grades held remarkably well under the excesaive reeelpt. Still prices have worked gradually lower and at the cloae of the week the general market Is quoted loQloc lower than at the close of last week. Cornfed beeves. . especially the medium grade, being somewhat neglected in favor of the cheaper grass beeves, showed a till greater decline, they being around la t3o lower than last week. Cows. and .heifers have been In very large supply every day and most grauea of killers have gradually eased otf unul at the clowe of the week prlcee are generally iuyi5c lower. A feature of the week's busi ness has been the remarkable way in which canners have held up. the market on that kind being relatively high. Unfavorable weather invariably tends to keep country buyer at home and the at tendance ol such buyer haa been very small this week, with the result that the feeder market la not aa good as It has been during some weeks. This together with the excessive receipts haa created a downward movement in val-ea, so that at the close of the week the general run of stock cattle and feeders shows a decline of lou-jc. At the same time the beat cattle have held up remarkably well and for the week they are littlo lower If any than one iruli o. Quotauona on native cattle: Good ta choice beef steer. NEW YORK. Sept. 17. -i Special to The Bee.) Ttie shipper re not going to have It all their own wav in the hearings befur the Interstate Commerce commission to de termine whether er not the railroads shall be permitted to raise freight rates. It Is freely stated In Wall street If the. shipper push the railroads too hard they will fight. It la further slated that If thev start In they will make the fur flv. It la aid In well Informed circle that the roads, or some of them, are provided with data a to Ihs profits made by some of the larger shippers, and that, if they are pushed too hard at the Inquiry, they will reply by asking about the business profits of the shippers and by asking why they should be i closely urged with reference to capi talisation and profits by persons or cor poration whose profits are so muck larger than their own. This position as one ol the road s official position had been fore shadowed in the recent past by men cioss to some of the railroad executives, who are making the fight most strenuously. It If alleged that this line of argument would have A considerable effect upon ptibllu opinion. Beide till and other forms o( publicity, th banking pressure on the ship per la being maintained and will be urged harder than ever, it Is understood, during the oomlng fall. Such press .re may be as ineffective aa In the past, but It Is believed that ways will be found to make It more inilueiuiai. particularly with snipper who are mure or lee closely dependent on their banks. There Is undoubtedly a very general and growing feeling among the stronger financial Interests that the present expose, with Its probable light upon conditions ol questionable desirability and Its tendency to disturb Industrial conditions. Is much to be deplored. One fact that has not been given much prominence heretofore but which Is com ing to be realised by both sides. Is th extent to which the public Is Interested In the contest and the prominent place th controversy le to oi"cupy in public attention. This has been felt more Uian ever since the controversy waa officially opened at Chicago. In past contests much of the testimony haa been behind closed door or has been of such a technical ort that th piibllo in general scarcely understood It. It I the effort of the shipper now to have the facts understood front their standpoint, and the road are making scarcely less ef fort to get their case plainly before th country, tha result being a large publlo In terest in the facts. The wheat growers may have a rising similar to that enjoyed by the cotton grow er before long. Estimated requirements for th wheal crop of all countries that figure In Uia world' wheat trade are ,-0uu.0U0 bushels, according to W. B. Snow, against offici ally reported crops last year In tha earns countries of 3,T&i.in8.0D bushels. In reach ing this total the United States Is credited with a crop of 76.(.iJ0. and Canada with 120,0in.owi bushels. The Broomhall estimate Is adopted for ail other countries, th crop of the southern continent. Argentine. Aus tralia and India, part of which is yet to be seeded, and none of which has yet encountered the vicissitude of the season. Is placed at 3.tiu,uoo bushels, against ?. This represents an In crease of 84.000.uuo over last year upon tha assumption of a full normal rate of yield In these count lies on as Increased acreuge. An actual falling below this high figure would Increase the apparent world's de ficiency by that much. On this basis of crop production ths sur plus available for shipment during tha present crop year Is estimated at 584.0iKj.01I0 bushelH, the United States being credited with 7,0uti.000 and Canada with 50.i0.mM. Tha requlrments f the Importing countries aggregate OU9.000.ono bushels. crediting France with only Mi.000.00u of foreign wheat Instead of 100.uoO.0O0 as Is now currently estimated by reliable foreign house In the wheat trade. Not only are the European, wheat crops short, but an additional bur den Is thrown upon It, because of the gener Aily poor food crop, particularly potatoes, on trie continent, t aking tne mom uoerai view of tha possible surplus from North America and anticipating better than average yields in Argentina, Australia and India, whims crops are yet to be made, says Mr. .Snow, "there Is atlll a material shortage In ths world's wheat supply this year." According to statistics specially oomplied by tha Journal of Commerce) and the rail road, industrial and traction corporation will dlmtibute this month the sum of IH2.483.29. These figures compare with, tH0.433.76S In September A year ago, an In crease of S12.049.48n. In August th total was tr.7.H01.5. Of this month's aggregate dividends will furnish A61.13.S9. an In crease, of S87.H01.5S. A number of corpora tions have either Increased their rates or declared extra dividend-, while a few ad ditions appear. It is predicted that the traffic; alliance between the Western Pacific and the Toy Klann Kalaha Steamship company will bring on an international freight rata war. when the Southern Pacific traffic agree ment with the Woe tern Pacific goes into effect.
