NEW YORK, Sept. 15. The principal
factor at work In the stock market touay
was the reversal of speculative operations
tor tne advance attempted eailler 111 tin
week and winch haa not inVt wltn encour
aging response by attracting any substan
tial demand trom certain sources.
1 here grew up some uneasiness over the
ronamon of the steel Industry, which had
the effect of giving positive force to tne re
action. Price concessions were yielded
grudgingly and there were signs of resist
ance and individual points 01 strengtn in
the market, but the whole market gave way
and closed decidedly weak.
No considerable revival of activity In the
steel trade Is looked for until the railroads
come into the market as tree buyers. Force
was given to this- view by the published
expressions of President McCrca of the
Pennsylvania on his return from abroad.
Further-consideration of the apparent
deadlock caused by the rejection of the
railroad validation tor cotton bills of lading
by the foreign bankers suggested possible
complications calculated to affect the
money market. It la likely that the first
effect ill be to hasten cotton shipments
before the date of the foreign tiankers' de
cision taking effect, which is October 31.
The bulge in the cotton market did not
disturb the feeling of confidence In the fa
vorable progress of the crops. Stocks were
unaffected by this consideration.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, $2,142,000. United States 4s, regis
tered, declined 14 per cent on call.
Number of sales and leading quotations
on stocks were ss follows:

CAi iLE Receipts of cattle were con
siderably smaller than yesterday, but still
the total lor the four days foots up over
40,000 head, being the biggest week thus
lar, and showing a big gain ot over 7, 'AW
head, as compared with the same four
days a year ago. The natural conditions
were all against sellers this morning, and
everything contributed toward delay in tne
trade, in the first place trains were many
of them late in arriving at tne yards, and
a steady fall of rain kept a good many
buyers in the house until lata la the fore
noon. More than that the rain made tne
cattle look less attractive than they would
otherwise. As a result the early market
was slow, and the morning was well ad
vanced before enough business bad been
transacted to make a market.
The market on beef steers waa slow and
late in opening and the feeling was gener
ally weak. Outside of a few of the best
cattle, which may have been steady or
neany steady, the market was slow to as
much aa loc and possibly 104,15c lower on
bouie kinds.
The market on cows and heifers was in
very much the same shape as beef steers,
that Is, some of the best kinds sold about
steady or close to steady, but the tendency
on the medium to common grades was
lower.
'the supply of feeders haa been large all
the week and the attendance of buyers
from the country waa rather sinau tins
morning, the threatening weather poasibly
keeping; seme of them away from the yards,
speculators nad a good many on hand and
while here and there they picked up some
thing that was especially wanted for the
fining ot orders at prices that were not
very much different, the general market
was decidedly slow and saiely loc and in
some caeea possibly more than that lower.

HOGS Hog trade reacted favorably this
morning under the Influence of a limited
supply and fairly active demand. Dime ad
vances were frequent in both divisions, but
prices were Irregular throughout, occa
sional sales showing less and other greater
Improvement. Light hogs were scarce and
commanded the long end of tne bulge,
prime lights selling as high as $9.45. as
compared with yesterday s top price of
$9.25. Bacon weights are especially at
tractive to shippers, of course, nnd move
more rapidly than the heavier grades.
Late trade Showed some weakness hers
and there, several of the early buyers re
tiring from the market after their orders
were filled, but neither llic amount ol
business transacted or the eauier prices
were sufficient to affect the general trend
of values.
Heavy hogs moved around $8.75, wit 11
rough heavies at the low figures. Medium
weights were In limited supply, but brought
$9.00 and better In most cases.

SHEEP In suite of the fan that Yester
day's receipts of sheep and lambs were
very heavy, final clearance In the after
noon found only a relatively small supply
in first hands. Holdover si rings consisted
mainly of odds and ends, actual sales for
the three days involving almosl 110,000
head out of a total count of 114.000 head.
Some weakness developed during late
rounds after many of the larger orders
had been filled, thin, light feeder lambs,
old feeder ewes and fat sheep closing at
iigures around 1 071 loc lower tnan those
of Tuesday.
Today's shlnments amounted to fully 18.-
000 head, but trains were late in arriving
and fleeces were wet, delaying trade until
wen along in the morning. Sheep were
Plontlful. feeders esrjecla.il v. and stood fut
lambs were aoarce. ,.
Demand from country buyers appeared to
be of ample volume, however, and aa soon
as strings could be shaped up In selling
lurm trading started on a aenerauy steaay
basis. Strong weight lambs sold around
$6.30, light weights around $5.85 and "pee-
wees under 85.50. Feeder sheep held in
much the same notches, common kinds of
old ewes proving slow sellers.
Fat sheep were slow, but a healthy feeder
demand held many of the In-between
grades to yesterday's levels, bulk of sales
showing little change. Fat lambs ruled
firm, owing to llxht supply of good ones
and active competition among buyers.
f or the four days this e'eek the general
market shows little notable change. The
poorer kinds of feeder ewes and light
lambs may possibly be' some lower, but
other classes of stock, while uneven, are
quotably steady. Good fat lambs are sell
ing, if anything, a little higher.
