Y., Au. 2t Theodore Ftoosevelt will .start Tuesday on a Journey of 5,4!t3 mllen, which will eitend over nearly three weeke, and tn the coure of which he will travel through fourteen atatea. During the tour he will deliver fourteen speeches, ono In each state. The party will travel In the private car republic, attacheu to regular trains, ex cept In a few cases In which special trains will be used for short dlHtances to enable Colonel Roosevelt to fill all hi engage ments. Ernest Abbott and W. B. Howland of New York, who are associated with him in his editorial work, and Frank Harper, lils secretary, will travel with him. In addition to his set speeches. Colonel Hoosevelt will make many extemporaneous addresses from the rear platform of his car. At almost every point along the line of travel elaborate preparations to receive him are being made, and from, start to finish he will be governed In his movements by a schedule which will keep him on the move during his waking hours. The start wlll.be made at 10 a. m. on August 23 and the first day's Journey will be over the New York Central railroad to Utica. iJlrectly he arrives he will go by trolley car to Orlukany, nine miles out of Utica, thence to Summit park, a mile further on, whore he Is to deliver an ad dress to the farmers of Herkimer and Oneida counties. He will spend the night at Mohawk, Herkimer county, at the coun try home of his brother-in-law, Douglas l.oblnson of New York. The Journey westward will be resumed at midnight the next night over the New York Central lines to Chicago, waiere the party Is due at p. m., August 26. At 10:45 p. m. the same night, the party will leave for Omaha, over the Chicago Northwestern. Arriving here at 3:28 p. m., August 26, the car will leave at 4 p. m., going by the Union 1'uclflc ruilway to Cheyenne, Wyo., which will be reached at 10:25 a. m.. August 27. Xecond Speech at Cheyenne. At Cheyennt Colonel Roosevelt will de liver his second set speech, at the cowboys carnival. He will spend Sunday with Gov ernor Brooks of Wyoming, at Cheyenne and will leave Cheyenne at 8:33 a. m., Auguta 29, going over the Union Pacific to Denver, where he Is to arrive at 11:35 that morning. In Denver he will speak on con servation remaining there until I a. m., August 30, when he will start for Pueblo, Colo., over the Denver & Bio Grande, he will reach Pueblo at noon and leave at 12:30 p. m. over the Missouri Pactflo for Ottawatomle, Kan., where ht is due at 9:30 a. m.. August 31. At Osawatomle the ex-president will de liver one of the most Important speeches of the trip. In It he will deal with a number of the problems with which the national administration Is especially con cerned. He will remain over night at Osawatomle and leave by the Chicago, Burlington & Qulncy railroad at 9:35 a. m. on September 1 for Kansas City, where he , .. t. tn rrlv. At 12-1R n. m. on that date. Arriving at Oman at 6:45 a. m. on September 2 he will make a speech on the Panama canal and spend the night there. The party will start out an a In at 7:30 a. m. on September S over the Chicago Sc Northwestern railroad for Sioux Falls and Is due there a( 4:30 p. m. on that date. At i a. m. on September 4 Colonel Roosevelt will leave over the Great Northern for FHrso, N. D., reaching there at p. m. Ha will attend the Labor day oelebratlon at Fargo and talk on labor. Leaving Fargo at 11:52 p. m. on Septem ber 6 over the Northern Pacific tie colonel will reach St. Paul at 7:40 a. m. on Sep tember 6. He will spend the day there, attend the state fair and speak on con servation at the National Conservation congress. He will depart from St, Paul at 10:30 p. m. the same day over the Chi cago, Milwaukee & St Paul railroad and will reach Milwaukee at 7:50 a. m. on September 7. Speech to Press Club. Tho Milwaukee speech will be delivered before the Press club of that city. Colonel Roosevelt will remain over night there, leaving at 7 a, m. on September over the Chicago & Northwestern railroad for Free port. III. He la due there at 11 a m. the same day to speak at a picnic of railway trainmen and firemen. Leaving at 1:40 p. m., he Is to reach Chicago at 4:55 p. m. and speak that night before the Hamilton elub. lie will leave Chicago at mJ.lnUht and the remainder of the Journey will be made over the Pennsylvania railroad. Cincin nati will be reached at S a. m. September 9 and Colonel Roosevelt will spend the day and night there, leaving at V n. m. on September 10 for Pittsburg. Reaching l'lttxhuig at 8:20 p. m. that day, he will ype.ik before the Civic league, and leave at 11:10 p. m. The Journey will be con cluded with the arrival at New York at 0:15 a. m. on September 11. The IshI spike In the Colorado A Southern's and Burlington's connecting link in this city was driven Friday evening, and at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon the first train, consist ing of six pussei.Ker coaches ' filled with railroad official, federal, state, county and city official, members of the press and citizens generally, passed over the new track, making a run from the Colorado St Southern terminal in West Cheyenne to the liurlington depot on Capitol avenue. Large crowd of enthusiastic people witnessed the pas.ne of the train thiough the busi ness section and Its arrival at the Burling ton depot. This is the first connection made between the Colorado Southern lints of the Burlington, and ' the parent system. Trains will be operated dally over this track from now on, and It Is reported that a new paKsunger station will be built on Carey avenue, the Burlington abandon ing Its present depot at the foot of Capitol avenue, and occupying the new station jointly with the Colorado & Southern. Reports from the Milwaukee have Just been Issued, showing that the earnings of the rail road for June bring the dividend totals of the year to a surplus of from $500,000 to $1, 000,000 above that of last year. The Increase, according to the report, will hold as being outside the Income of 11,800,000 which comes from the charge made against the Puget Bound railroad for the use of plants and for proportionate expenses In the conduct of the Milwaukee & Puget Sound railroad. It Is announced that the next annual re port will show the Puget Sound railroad making a respectable return on the money invested In it. It Is expected the younger Una will furnish H.000,000 Interest on the rirst $100,000,000 of first mortgage bonds turned over to It by the parent company. Some months ago the Milwaukee filrcj with the atock exchange an Income ac count for eight months of last year, in which Income from lnvestmenta was given as 4.235,:!5, against only 1.0ao,000 for the whole of the previous year. This great gain was fargely the result of Interest pay ments from the Puget Sound, but to Just what extent it has bt-en impossible to as certain. If this item for eight months in cludes only the accruula of that period the Investment Income for the entire yt-ar should approximate Iti.OOO.OoO, and In that iase the Milwaukee would have covered iti dividends bt'yond all question. New Of flees at salt Lake. The Oregon Short Line has planned a mammoth structure for general office pur poses In Suit Lake City, Utah. It will bo large enough to house the entire general offices, and it la now learned that tho engineers have received ordrta to make their plans for a building that will meet the requirements of the big company tor many years to come. This means that the building will probably be more than six stories high. Each Uepart.iitnt will have its rooms planned for the special use of the department. The engineering rooms, for Instance, are to Include the most mod ern blue print room, and the tickut depart ment will be provided with a fireproof stock room. Railroad Notes. When passenger service between 8alt Lake City and the coast begins this month, the Globe Express company, a tloutd cor poration, will operate over the line. It Is estimated that this corporation and the Pacific Express may be combined, the name of the Globe retained The total assessment roll of railroad property In California has been fixed at $130,3!6,141 for this year by the State Board of . Equalization, an Increase of 18,313,864 over last year. Burlington officials have cancelled the order requiring the removal qf engine crews from Aurora, 111. It would have disturbed 400 families. The Grand Trunk railway of Canada has declared the regular semi-annual dividend of i'i per cent on the second preferred stock. Tho Salt Lake route has under considera tion the building of a line from Oasis, on the main line, to Fish Springs; In the Deep Creek country, 150 miles, and perhaps to Ely, Nev., but probably will not settle the matter until after the new road through Meadow Valley, Wash., has been com pleted. Bids tor the latter Vill soon be Invited. Building Boom at Sioux Falls Record of New Construction for the Tear Will Exceed Two Mil lion Dollars. SIOUX FALLS. S. D.. Aug. 21.-(Speclal.) Figures Just complied by me Daily Argus Leader show that Sioux Falls la doing more In the building line than any other city of its size in the west or northwest. Business houses completed during the last twelve months or In course of construction at the present time represent a total of $1,682,000. The largest Item in this total Is the Mor rell Packing company, which is erecting a new plant, consisting of eight brick and concrete buildings and two frame struc tures, at a cost of $750,000. In addition to the business houses, during the last twelve months, including those new under con struction, new residences to the value of $512,700 have been or are being erected. This makes a grand total of $2,11(5,600 worth of new business houses and residences during the twelve months. In addition to the above, other improvements have been de cided upon which will cost In the aggregate about $550,000, thee Including a JJW.UOO ad dition to the government building, for which congress already has made the necessary appropriation, and a sewer through the western part of the city which will cost $150,000, and for which contracts will be awarded September 6.
