. OMAHA. Aug. , 1910.
The strength In wheat ls based entirely
on the unfavorable weather in France.
hlch la - Imnmllnff harvratinir (mentions.
Foreign news Is the market feature and the
present course of prices Is dependent on
this nws. Domestic conditions are bearish,
the movement of new wheat Is very liberal
and stocks are nlllne- tin owina to the llarht
shipping demand.
Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma continue
to get showers where It ls most needed.
While stocks of contract corn are small
the mora favorable conditions prevailing
should cause freer country selling and a
decline In values Is looked for.
Wheat opened firm on strong cables and
bulllxh foreign advances. Later the pressure
of liberal country selling and hedging sales
brought a decline and the market sagged
heavily and closed on the low for the day.
Long corn wss pressed on the market.
and with the weakness In wheat values
eased off sharply. Weather outlook Is
much better and selling by the country ls
in larger volume and some further decline
Is expected.

CATTLE There were no cattle of any
consequence In the yards this morning, but
for the week receipts have been the largest
of the year to date, showing not only large
gains over all previous .weeks, but being
almost twice as large aa for the same week
year. ago. As explained before In these
columns the large receipts of cattle at this
time of tha year are due to dry weather on
the range, which cured un tho grass earner
than uaual, so that cattle are ready to ship
nd are coming to market a month earner
than usual.
While there has been a considerable
sprinkling of cornfed steers on sale all tha
week the demand has been so brisk that
prices have gradually firmed up and at
the close of the week are 25c higher than
one week ago. Even medium grades of cat
tle have shown Improvement as well aa tha
better grades. Range beef cattle hava also
been very good sellers all tho week, with
prices on that kind as much as 1015
higher than one week ago.
The supply of cows and hellers has Deen
very liberal throughout tha week, but not
too much ao to meet the requirements of
buyers. Fair; to good kinds have sold very
freely with gradually tarengtnemnc prices
and they are safely 10i&15c higher than last
week. On the other hand oommon and can
ning kinds have not been such brisk sellers
owing . perhaps to the large Increase In
tha reoeipts on that kind and aa a result
they have shown no Improvement as re
gards prices.
Operators on the market are an agreea
that there never was a time when the pro
portion of feeding cattle was so small as
compared to tne total receipts, wnue a
good many trashy light stockers have been
coming forward desirable feeding cattle
have been in very small supply. As a result
of this prices throughout tho week have
been firm and at the close ara generally
quoted as much as 2540c higher' than they
were a week or ten days ago. In soma
cases posBiby 60o advance may hava been
made.

HOGS Active demand and brisk trading
In the hog yards this morning gave the
market a very roDust appearance in both
divisions. There were plenty of wrinkles
in trade surface, as might be expected, but
any new ones were weicomea by sellers,
much or tne biuii seuing on a quoiamy
strong basis.- In a general way the marret
ruled steady to strong, heavy and rough
heavies claiming most an 01 ine silgntly
higher margin.
Kastern advices were lower, but this
phase of the trade was Ignored by buyers,
as supplies were limited. Shippers needed
only a fw nogs ana ins duix weni 10 ins
packers, everything going f the acaies
within two hours after the market opened.
Heavies moved arouno i.toi.wi. ana gooa
mixed brought $7.7oi7.liO, - according to
weight Lights commanaea w.u(as.vu ana

price paid. Bulk ranged from 87.56 to $7.90.
The ween a iraae nas oeen more or eu
uneven with receipts liberal and welgnts
still running heavy. Average trade today
ls generally steady with average trad last
Saturday, but range has narrowed some
what. In other words, neavy nogs are sell

HOOK OF INSURANCE FAKIRS
Investors In Western Cities j lalet to
Have Reea PlncheA by rro
motera. .-,
A prominent city tn tha west waa recently
Invaded by several parsons bent upon tha
organisation of a life lnsuranca company.
The plans they presented, tho literature
they exhibited and tha appeals they made
to local pride and human freed resulted
In their obtaining subscriptions ' for tha
capital and surplus required. With tha ad
vance payments secured, tha promoter In- '
corporated, the company fitted up' a ault
of offices In elegant style and elected them,
selves the executive officers of tha company
at good round salaries. Tha mora prominent
subscribers were named. aa directors o
concern, and using their names aa andora
ers of tho scheme, tha promoters readily se
cured a fair amount of .business from tha
business associates, , acquaintances and
townsmen of the directors'. Money came in
freely, and tha' officers reported that tha
company was "booming." , After a few
months some of tha directors sound,' level
headed business men-r-concluded to investi
gate tha affairs of the: company for'whloh
they stood spongers. The result -sowed that
the money which came !nro freely had been
mora frely oonsumd In aalarlea and ex
penses, and that the only beneficiaries to
date were the promoter, who had made no
provision for the policyholders they had sa- y
cured. Ona day a bomb fell into the camp
of tha promoters In tha shape of. request
from tha directors that they resign and
give up all connection with tha. company.
Thereupon the promoters produced a con
tract made between tha company and them
selves which provided for their retention
In office tor a term., pjt, years at specified.
salaries, and also guaranteeing them a
liberal commission upon all tha ' business
transacted. These wily promoters had tha
whip hand of the directors and were de
termined to Improve their 'opportunity. In '
short, tha directors, who ' had their own
good names to protect, were forced to buy
out the promoters, reorganize the company
and make up the impaired capital. The pro
moters then sought Other fields 'and paa-
lunres new in wnion to renear ineir nnara--
ttons. Tha directors who had been thus drfr"
ceived immediately secured the services ot
some practical insurance men to manage
the business, and the company Is now
fairly on Its feet, after a severe struggle
with insolvency staring it in tha face, and
ls making fairly good progress. This la an
Instance of the practical' results of the pro
motion schemes with which the' country ha
been flooded with tha exception that a
majority of such cases result in failure
after the promoters hava- made all they
can out of them. Subscribers to such paper
concerns are often xnlsled by the take state- -
ments and "doctored" statistics that pre
tend to show the immense profits to ba re
alised from a small investment. Natural
cupidity has much weight In securing sub- '
business precaution would save many fran
becoming victims to this alluring bait, Thtr
publlo has been swindled out of hundreds
of thousands of dollars during; tha last few
years by these "promotion fakir." New
