Buying orders here from France had much to do with pushing up the price of wheat today. Tha close was firm at a net advance of HdJ'ac. The latest figures for eorn were WtfC higher than last night. Oats were up 4o and provisions Irregular, varying from 12Vc loss to a gain of Be. - Conditions for the wheat crop In France and Argentina were reported less favorable and foreign markets generally showed strength.' The local speculative element of the larger and more active sort took the hull side from the outset and kept per sistently on, although three btg houses sold n.or. than 2.000,000 bu. of long wheat. Some attention was paid to the Ohio slate report. which put the vleld there at 24,000,000 bu., as against 27,000,000 bu. last year. There was also discussion as to the estimate made by , a local .crop expert, who figured the total' output of the United Statea at from 644.000,600 . to -641,000,000 bu. Fluctua tions in tha .September option ranged from $1.01 to 31.02, with the close ftc to Htyo up at $l.or.Hii1.02Vi. Corn waa largely under the Influence of tha strength In wheat. HiKh and low points for the September option proved to be 63c and C2Kc, - with the close firm at &iHe. a rise of o above the price twenty four hours previous. The cash market also T as firm. No. 3 yellow closed at 6.1c. For the September option In oats changes today were bounded by 36'ic and Htc, with the final sales '40 up at 3Vri37c. CHOPS HOLD LARGEST ATTENTION Denial that Prlcee of Steel Prodneta Aro to Bo Cat Doea Not Quiet Lower Market Talk. NEW YORK, Aug. 4. Tha speculative at titude towards the stock market remains ona of watching and waiting, aa waa shown in the halting and Irregular movement of prices today and tha extreme dullness of tha trading. Tha course of tha crops holds the largest share of speculative attention. The making of tha harvest for wheat as It proceeds northward seems to bear out the earliest estimates or to exceed them both as to yield and to quality. The evidence of Im provement in conditions affecting the corn crop does not preclude anxiety over the critical period still to be met by that crop. The reported denial by the president of the United Stattes Steel corporation that prices of steel products were being cut did not set at rest entirely the belief that the market in that Industry was tending lower. The special weakness In the copper move ment revived doubt over the succena of effort to bring about effective reduction of output. In the field of politics tha action of party conventlona in tha western statea was advanced by soma operators as ground for selling stocks, In the view that move ments to alter tha traffic and renewed agitation of antl-corporatlon sentiment de tract from the demand for corporation se curities. Tha favorable views of ha crop outlook and aeveral good reports of car loadings by rail were factors In turning tha downward movement of prices up wards, una net changes proved trivial. However, It was a fair run and tha total for tha four daya thia week la over 25,000 head, the largest of the year to date. While a considerable proportion of the cattle consisted of west erns there was also quite a sprinkling of natives und cornfeds. The feeling on the market was very good owing to moderate receipts and a favorable eastern outlook. The trade opened in good season in the morning and the big bulk of the cattle changed hands at a comparatively early hour. Beef steers, both corn-feds and western rangers, were In good demand and the trade fairly active at good strong pricea. The b g bulk of the offerings changed hands in very good season in the morning. Cows and heifers were also free sellers at strong prices and the market was in a good healthy condition. The supply of desirable feeding cattle continues small and the market strong. Nickel declines were more frequent In both divisions, a large share of a liberal supply selling on this basis. Tha market was very uneven from start to finish, as has been the case on most days lately and movement was at no time very active. Grassy loads met with severe discrimina tion and in many oases had to go at figures 20o lower than strictly corn-fed hogs of the same weight. Shippers bought cau tiously, but were better buyers as far as prices were concerned on tha led loads that they needed. Ordinary run of good heavy hogs moved around 27.55'7.60, and rough and packing grades were well sold at $7.46u7.j"j0. Uood mixed brought $7.70Cg7.75, and light mixed and bacon hogs commanded the high fig ures. Selected lights topped at $h.15, a nickel less than yesterday's 'no. Bulk re malned in much the saint, notches, most of the run going at a spread of $7.5u7.85. For tha four days this week, receipts have bean liberal with quality mixed and weights generally heavy. Demand from packers has been ample on most days, but trade has been rather slow and erratlq. Current prices average up pretty close to 60 lower as compared with last Saturday's market. and butchers, No. At. 86. Pr. No. At. 8h. Pr. 2 266 ... 1 tS 66 804 40 t 46 16 240 ... Mod erate receipts were yarded, but the big end of the run consisted of lambs most of the stuff showing up In feeder flesh. Inquiry from killers was rather backward In spite of the fact that fat sorts were light, but recent values were well sustained as a rule and the market could hardly be de scribed other than steady. Fat lambs sold up as high as $7.00, ewes brought $3.95, choice handy weight wethers are still quot able at $4.1094.25, and prime light year lings would top at $5.35 or better. On the other hand, feeder lambs are be ginning to show quite a little dullness. Country outlet Is by no means as broad as It was last woek and while last week's quotations are still In force, offerings are accumulating too fast for buoyancy. Tone to today's trade was very slow and trend of prices decidedly weak. It would take an extra good feeder quality to command $6.00 and light thin grades would have to sell around $5.65&5.80. Feeder sheep are wanted, however, and current quotations on good ones are strong to a little higher, as compared with those of last Saturday. For the week, receipts of fat stock have been fairly liberal and trade generally quiet. Changes In the scale of prices have been small and most kinds of sheep and lambs are closing on much the same basis as at last week's close.
