Automatic,'.' Is out. As It title Indicates It
Is intended tq boost the Independent Tele
phone company and Lysle I. Abbott Is
ita editor. The leading article of th first
Issue says;,,
Many of our subscribers have asked us I
how it Is pusnlble for the receiver of the
independent Telephone company to go
ahead with construction work and develop
the property when th company Itself was
unable ho to do. A little explanation will
make this perfectly clear. The present suit
was .brought to foreclose the mortgage
securing tne .bonds. A public service cor
poration owed duchx a suty to the publlo
that It cannot stop doing business. Its
franchlsa require it to give certain ser
vice to the public. That these franchise
requirements be carried ut the court in
this case appointed Lysle 1. Abbott as re
ceiver . in Older that he In that capacity
miKht operate the plant, of the telephone
company pending the sale In foreclosure.
The old company could do no additional
construction Work because Its Income wait
not sufficient to provide f"mls for that
purpose. The supreme court ot the United
States has said that It is tha duty of a
court In a case of this kind to preserve
the property for tha bondholders. Here waa
a large Investment, which was non-pro-diictlve
because Incomplete. 'Business men
want telephones over which they can talk
to South Omaha and Florence and other
suburbs and. the -women want telephones
over which they can reach their husbands'
Dl aces of business. In order to make this
property productive and to preserve it for
the bondholders it waa deemed necessary
to do certain construction work. The court
appointing tha receiver In view of these
circumstances ordered th construction of
an exchange in South Omaha and also ona
in Florence, This work was immediately
undertaken and Is now well along towards
completion. It Involves the laying of under
ground cables for almoin five miles, suffi
ciently large to permit 300 conversations to
puss between. South Omaha and Omaha at
the same time. . When, these, cables, are In,
as they will b within the next thirty days.
It practically annexes South Omaha for all
business-purposes. I .. . -
