(NEW YORK, July .There waa a dis position tooay in ibe fmanci.l aistrict to luro to the oanauig and financial position lr eapianaiHia ui the artmn of the stock fuaikrc 'iue increaaed prominence given to the subject ol the banawg ntuaJ.Kn grew out of the published exretwions of oms of the distinguished baiiking authori us of the Interior regarding the ierm land siierulation and the cx i.aeKiuenees to be ap piehenoed from it. The ubj.t itaell Is not a good one. nor la ire Importance newly regaroed by New Tork banaera, since it baa been dwelt on for moutha past and with special stress ever since the abstract of reports ef national banks under the lt comptroller s call in March became know n, disclosing a loan expansion In a year' a time of half a billion dollar. This special strews on the subvert has kept alive a con viction that the original position waa In course of correction. That correction ia not maintained by the interior banking authori ties now posted. There is complaint that the smaller banks are still burrtr,.1 w ,ih mortgages and with farmers' paper instead of the ususl InveKtments in commercial paper, which serve aa a seconds- re serve, while their balances In the reserve banks axe below normal. Such a position indicate that tba crop moving require ment will have to be met t a larger ex tent than usual by calling on the larger banking centers for accommodation. The ' lntlmaiion that tbe reports now being sent to the comptroller, but not yet in shape for tabulation, will not show the expected Improvement In tbe credit position had a disturbing effect on sentiment and was a large factor in tbe early crash of prices todsy. Borne few stocks then fell to be low lant week's low levels, thus establish ing them at the loweet for tbe year. The Importance attached to tbe prospec tive condition left speculative sentiment ready to be easily influenced by tbe re ports that gold had been engaged In Lon don for shipment te New fork. The violent recovery tn stocks was the result. While tbe recent oouree of foreign ex change rales had preaased such a move ment, today's engsgement came sooner than waa expected. The effect was to stiffen - tbe -discount rate in London and arouse tune question w het her the official bank rate would be reduced tomorrow, as was expected. It is not believed, however, that any determined obstacle will be op posed t tbe movement of gold to New York. Tbe return on money now ia con siderably lower in London than In New York, offering an Inducement to place London funds In Kew York. Subscriptions for tbe American bonds recently sold abroad are payable In installments, which call for remittances to New York. Tbe merchandise export movement from this country has shown improvement and imports- have fallen off. There bsve been purchase of securities in the New York stock market for London account during the severe depression ef the last few days, and these have helped to wneaken tbe rates. That free recourse for relief is open to the New York money market In London is a belief warranted by these con-wltions. The decline In wheat and com helped stock a. the strong rally In wheat on un favorable weather predictions In tbe wheat region helnlng to unsettle tbe rally at tbe last. The early sever declines were more than recovered, however, and th net rains were retained at their closing. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par rvalue, 12.ffTl.OfiO. Svppllea were normal, consisting largely of rrassers. and feeder sort was relatively small Native spring lambs sold sa high aa tt K. but grass sorlhrers arc not Quot able over 17 It at most. Good grass wethers went at Ml and arsss ewes commanded M-2o. Generally speaking, yesterday s ad vance was fully sustained on all classes ot stork, bulk of sales appearing steady. The slow ton to trade was generally ascribed to heavy receipt and lower trend to values in tne east. There was not very much activity in feeder circles owing to limited offerings and th delay rauaed in shaping up the stuff for sale. Two or three loads of tbe ssme kind of feeder lambs that moved at tt 2b yesterday were received, but this, sheep were in very light supply.
