Wild fluctuations tarylng almost 3 cents wound up today In a net gain of lie to lc a bushel for wheat. KxpertH traveling In the north Issued sen sational reports as to proupentlve crop losses, one authority putting tha probable North Ua-kota product at only about 40 per cent ot the total estimated by the government on June l. Light but general rains over North Dakota an J South Da kota, however, with cooler temperature halted what threatened to bo a runaway market Kxclted speculation was also wit nessed In corn and oats, where there were final gains of respectively VA!'o to e, and -s'U:o. Hog products at the xlose were down 25-(j27ViC. Buying of wheat todaO was tha greatest In .volume this week. Northwestern mar kets at no time during the session were ho strong relatively as Chluago, a fact at tributed here to selling by millers. On the other hand southwestern exchanges Joined In the bull enthusiasm. At the outset tha Chicago market, like a stalled train, backed up a little, and then went forward with a rush. The occasion or the opening dip waa news of rain during the night In North Dakota, but the moisture, except In one county, was found to bu only sufficient to lay the dust. Later teports bald the weather was clear and hot. Then came allegations that tha northwest wheat country had suffered the heaviest losses In Its history. (Simultaneously un toward dispatches kept attention somewhat directed upon the poor finish of tho winter crop in western Kansas and Nebraska. Kalns today throughout South mid North Dakota occurred just In the nick of time for profit-taking on the part of many dealers. Other selling also was of a most spirited character, but there was a fair reaction in tho last few minutes, the mar ket closing firm. NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Renewed Reports of Crop Damage Cause Depression in Market. WICKERSHAM SPEECH CITED AilifreM of Attorney General In (tl, ri(o Adtoeallng I e of at tonal I'omrr to Correct I'ablle lvlls Ulsrnssed. NEW YORK, June 24. The stock market fell Into depression again today under the combined influence oi reneweil reports of crop damage and of the publication of At torney Oeueral U Ickersiiam's speech in Chicago. 'ihe close correspondence In the specula tive movements In grain and stocks was seen In the course of the early 1 luetuatlons In the market. (Stocks started higher ail wheat started lower. hen w heat com menced to advance stocks began to decline. At the same time reports ot extensive dam age not only to spring wheat, but to corn, began to come into UhII street In a flood. 'Ihe manner In which the subject of gov ernment control of capitalization was treated by Attorney General Wickersham In his Chicago aduress seemed to appeal with new force to operators In stocks. Ap parently the determination voiced by Pres ident Taft in yesterday's statement, and indicated In the attorney generals argu ment, to make aggressive efforts towards securing the desired new legislation In the coming session of congress offered a new phase of the subject. Mr. W ickersham s advocacy of use of the national power "to correct every evil of a public character, which experience demonstrates to be sus ceptible ot correction only by national leg islation," was seized on to Indicate a broadened scope for government pursuit of corporations. There was a supposition that the pres sure on stocks, believed to come largely from professional sources, had In It provo cative purpose to bring out support from the financial party credited Willi a desire to see stocks advance. The arrival at his office of J. P. Morgan for the first time since his annual home-coming was coin cident with the most active selling move ment of the day.. Preliminary estimates of the week's cur rency movement Indicated a further large influx of cash to New York from outside sources, the margin over the absorption from the market by the sub treasury run ning to several million dollars. Sterling exchange bills declined nt one time several points below the low point ,of yesterday. The mlmlnence of the half-yearly settle ments steadied the London money market to some extent. Honds were Irregular. Total sales, rnr value, $5,8S!,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Number of sales and leading quotation on stocks were; ales. Hlfth. Low. Close. Totals 1,535 6, 400 1.2S1 CATTLE Friday is never a very good day in tne caule trade and It was worse touaay than usual. Prices ail tills week have been going down hill very rapidly, not only here, but at every other market point, owing to very heavy receipts in the lace of a diminished demand. As locai buyers had already purchased a good niajiy caule this week, tuey were in no great need ot additional supplies today and could afford to take their time. Ths fact was that they did not appear to cars wneiuor tney secured the cattle today or not. Prices, as may be imagined, were again lower than yesterday, wnlle it is difficult to name ths amount of ths decline from day to day, when prices are breaking so apldly, li is very o.am to ds seen wm.t. the market is now a no-it 41-00 lower tnau it was the early paj-. .t last Week on the general run of cuu ,i to medium grassy steers, grass cows aud heifers aud stock cattle, oood to choice steers ara posslbiy not over 26&50c lower, with pretty lair Kino around 601160 lower. It would be hard work lo lind any cows or neuers, ver. kood they luiahl be. that are not at least UK! lower, and fair to a,ood feeders e as much as 2ow60o lower tnan last. week. While the decline has been very heavy, it will be well for shiuoers to bear in mind that It has not been limited to this market point, but that other markets bava auliered fully as mucn anu, in sums case, even more. The feeling among operators nn the market seems 10 bs .that ths country ought to reduce shipments until th market could have a breathing spell, as ths pres ent break is duo in large, part to heavy receipts at all points, limitations on cattle: Good to choice corn-fed steers, I7.2fcia.00; fair to good corn- ted steers, 4tj.oOu7.2f; common to tair corn ted steers, 4o.ooiii4.6o; good to choice cows and heifers, f6.2uitHi.76; fair to good cows and heifers, 3. SHEEP Asine fromvery light receipts of sheep and lambs Unlay quality was on ths trips order, so that the trade developed no new features worth mentioning. Sev eral small bunches ot fed stock arrived, but Practically nothing In the line of grass sheep from range sections was on sale. In a general way prices paid were generally steady with those of yesterday, but de n and is Still narrow and supply was easily ampl. For the week thus far receipts have been rather liberal, the bg end of tho run con sisting of grsss sheep Eastern trade Is very dull, however, and the local market more or less unsatisfactory from the open ing. Blkck demand has resulted In lower prices on all kinds of fat stock, sheep clos ing about 2T.il 40c lower and spring lambs showing declines of 2643 UK-. It takes a pretty totipy grade of grass wethers to bring J4.t er bet-er, and the best kind of spring lambs ars hardly quotable over fTM. Feeder trade Is showing some activity, but tho Volume of actual business is sea sonably small Thin stock suitable for the feed lot and pasture Is selling on much the same basis as fair quality killing st ick.
