"Poets don't seem td be appreciated In
this country," laments Brlghtslde, as the
First Born brushes In for the dally word
handicap.
"Why the sob for the sweet singers?"
queries Son, shooting smoke spirals ceiling-
ward.
"I see the Immigration officials have Just
refused to allow a foreign bard to enter, as
he had only $24 and a suit case filled with
verses," explained Father.- "He had no
regular trade and they decided he couldn't
make a living writing rhymes."
"So they barred tho bard without giving
him a chance to show what he could grind
out?" muses Son.
'Who knows what Mllton-Hke lays were
lost forever to America in that rejected
genius?" demands Father.
"I don't care so much for the lays," Son
says, "as I do for letting the twenty-four
bucks get away. I didn't know a real
poet ever had that much money."
'No wonder the literature of this land
limps when we show such indifference to
man who has devoted himself to the art
of writing," Father protests. "To me there
Is nothing more inspiring than a beautiful
poem."
'The only trouble with 'em is the land
lord won't take 'em on the rent," suggests
Son. "He'd rather have a small wad of
the long green than a trunkfull of the
Jingle, Jlr.gle, Bllver bells' stuff."
"It must be very discouraging to try to
write one's soul into the classics," sur
mises Father.
'Especially on an empty stomach," ad
mits Son. "If a chap could take a few
bites off a nice juicy porterhouse ateak
before peeling off hla coat to hit up the

clares. "Men who can write poems like 'Tne
Man With the Hoe' need not be ashamed
of their calling," asserts Father.
"The man that juggles' the hoe In the
cornfield stands a better chance of drag
ging down his three Bquare meals a day,"
Son answers.
"Then, as conditions are now, a man can
not make a living by producing verses,"
Father Burmlses.
"Nix on the eats unless he produce tha
cush," agrees Son.
"The government should settle pension
on our poets," Father suggests, "and print
their volumes just as It does tha congres
sional records."
"And they would be read just as eag
erly aa the livestock bulletin and the other k
thrilling manual on how to trim the whis
kers of a gypsy moth without belonging
to the barbers' union," Son conclude.
