First Day Easy;
One Fatality
Automobile Journey Begun with Run
to Louisville, Xy., Woman
Killed in Runaway.
LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 15. (Special
Telegram.) The first day's run of the
Glldden tour proved little more than a
Joy ride, except for a few bad stretches be
tween Clnoinnati and Lexington. The on
tire run to Louisville was over the finest
kind of macadam pike. A few of the
cars experienced alight troubles, but no
heavy penalties were inflicted. Twenty'
seven cars started, about bait the usual
number.
Tha Col car, contesting for th Chicago
trophy, met with an accident near Middle
town, Ky. Driver Martin was speeding
his car at about forty miles an hour when
he found the road blocked by an approach
ing automobile and a horse and buggy
Before he had an opportunity to bring his
car to a standstill he had collided with the
buggy. His right front wheel was smashed
and the penalty will undoubtedly put bim
out ot the contest.
The first ot the Glldden toura to finish
the day's run waa the Premier, driven by
Ray McNamara.
The second day' run to Nashville starts
from this city at 7 o'clock. The day' run
Is 193.9 miles. The running time will b
eight hours and forty-two minutes.
The run to Louisville waa somewhat
marred by a fatal accident near Millvllle.
A horse driven by Mrs. Marie Hedrlck be
came frightened at one ot the LoulavllU
automobiles, which was going out to meet
the incoming tourists. Mrs. Hedrlck leaped
from the buggy and fell upon her head.
She was carried to Frankfort by the Clno
car and died in the hospital there this
evening. The accident was particularly
pathetic through the fact that Mrs. Hed
rlck was on her way to Frankfort to
see her husband, who lay seriously 111
there. Mr. Hedrlck died while his wife
was being taken to the hospital.
The cars suffering penalties were the
Chalmers No. 4, 3 points for adjusting a
brake rod; Col No. 6, 30 points for a
clogged gas pipe; Parry No. 8, 3 points
for getting gasoline outside of a control;
Pennsylvania No. 14, penalty unknown, for
replacing a pinion on the magnet. Cole No.
lot, penalty unknown, for wheel broken In
accident; Fall car 108, 00 pqlnts for re
placing the magnet; Lexington No. 110,
4 points for replacing a brake road pin;
Wesuott No. 11, six points for adjustment
on the carburetor.
