CHICAGO, June 7. Twice today the

NEW YORK. June 7.-Ths stock market
greeted the news of an agreement on the
rata dispute between the government
authorities and the railroad executives
with a spasmodic recovery of the de
clines or several days past. Tha excess
of speculative operations for th decline
based on that conference was demon
strated beyond dispute. The demand from
uncovered snorts was so urgent and im
perative as to cause an opening jump in
prices rarely equalled for wlldness and
disorder. When the first wild scramble of
the bears to cover shorts was over there
ensued a more conservative view of the
situation and It was not until tha end of
the day that prices rose again to the
best.
Tha difficulty of appraising the news
grew out of th stress laid on tha pre
vious speculation on the Immense im
portance to the railroads increased freight
rates which the government waa oppos
ing. The demoralization in stocks caused
by the injunction against a small percent
age of the proposed increase contrasted
with tha violent rebound of the postpone
ment by the railroads of all the proposed
Increases and their voluntary submission
to the provisions of the pending railroad
law constituted a seeming anomaly. The
explanation cam partly from the fact of
tha greatly extended short Interest, which
was forced to buy stocks, but which hoped
to do so at a further decline. It was
evident also that great relief was felt by
the railroad officials over the abandon
ment of the sppeal to the anti-trust law
In return for tha surrender of the proposed
rsts increase.
The Influence of the announcement from
the Whito House was enhanced by the pro
fessions of satisfaction from railroad offi
cials who had expressed most alarm over
the suit to enjoin tha rata advances and
their opinion that threatened cessation of
Improvement might not prove necessary.
Negotiations, it waa said, for the sale of
$15.ooo,0ot) of Michigan Central bonds in
Paris, which had been suspended, would
be resumed and this assertion was of more
effect on sentiment than yesterday's news
of the sale of $25,000.0110 of Southern Pacific
bonds In Germany in spit of th rat In
junction. The unsettled tone which Intervened after
the opening Jump was much emphasized by
the atural tendency to realize profits on
so considerable a rebound. This selling pro
ceeded to such lengths, especially In St.
Paul as to arouse a suspicion of renewed
liquidation on account of an important
capitalists group. Public expression of
lukewarm satisfaction by a prominent
niemher of the group seemed to shift sus
picion to that of a purpose to1-depress
prices and th market thereafter rallied.
The agreement made by the railroad ex
ecutives to leave the rate increases to
the operations of the new railroad law
shitted attention to the progress of that
measure through Its final stages and the
definitive for which it might take.
The market waa favorably affected by
th computations made by railroad of
ficials of th time that could be saved in
putting Into effect new freight rates by
the consideration that could be given to
the new schedules by th commerce com
mission pending the enactment of the new
railroad law.

was awarded today. 147 cars being reported
In up to noon as compared with 4,029 head
last Tuesday and 3,140 head on tha corre
sponding Tuesday of last year.
The same bullish tone that featured the
demand yesterday was still evident today,
but did not affect the price Hut to as great
an extent. Supplies were not excessive
nd with firm advices from the east ther
was a very good inquiry for both local
dressed beef men anl shippers. Early
trade was a little quiet, but traders soon got
down to business and anything useful In
tn way oi beet steers sold at iigures luuy
steady with thos of yesterday.
The proportion of cows and heifers was
non too large, only about, tweiity-flv or
thirty loads of this class of stock being
included In tha run. Both local and out
side butchers bought freely from the open
ing and the big bulk of offerings sold in
good season. Prices ruled a shad higher
on all classes, the bulk of sales appearing
to b fully steady to a llttl higher than
those of yesterday. Veal calves ara In usual
food demand and are selling at figures
ully as high a last Friday, while there
Is llttl notable change In bulls, stags and
rough stock generally.
Desplt th fact that mere wer oniy a
