Uurlng the time of advsne'nrj nrlees
there was a supposition entertained that
some sort of .working agreement hud been

government authorities for a solution of
the rate controversy on lines which would
relieve the anxieties of railroad officials.
The asserting of President Hrown of the

eastern railroads offered more than a month

Bank Clearings.
I OMAHA,- June 6 Bank - clearlnag for
today were 12,866,297.65. and for the Cor-
Dun's Report of Bank Clearings
Bank clearing for the month of May do not make quite so faverabe a showing as fat
earlier monthg of the year, although the comparisons with earlier years are quite satisfac
tory; total bank eiohangsi for all cities reporting In the United States, aeeordlng to the
statement compiled by R. G. Don & Co., which Includes 116 leading centers, aggregate
$13,072,945,521. Making allowance for the difference in the number of business day the
gain la LO per cent,; compared with the corresponding month last year, and 1.7 per cent,
compared with the aatdre year 1906. There are losses at New York and Boston, compared
with both year, reflecting conditions In the financial markets, and probably to some extent
tn the cotton and woolen trades ; but aside from those two centers practically all
of the leading elrjea make larger return than for previous eorrespondlng periods
In New England there 1 some loss, due ' to the predominating Influence at
Boston, but meet eitlo report' gain, notably Providence, Hartford, Springfield,
Worcester, New Bedford and Portland. In the Middle Atlantic, State there were tome very
ettsfaetory gain and the exhibit indicate active condition at the principal points, among
them Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Buffalo, Rochester, Syraeute and Seranton. In the South
Atlantic Statea the general showing ia eery good, the marked Increase at Atlanta, Rich
mond, Norfolk, Savannah, Macon and Jacksonville Indicating continued prosperity In the
territory they serre. Burrtno continues very active at moot of the principal cities In tha
Middle Sonth, and total exchanges for the month in that section are considerably In exoess
f the same period tn any earlier year, and though there arc a few small losses they are not
ef particular slgnifleaao. Ameng the eltle making Uoreased returns arc St LcnU, New
Orleans, Iaoaisyllla, Memphis, Galveston, Chattanooga and Birmingham. Throughout the
Middle West there Is a general increase In bank clearing and the total make a very Im
prests! r gain, altheogh at few point tkare are losses, and at some the gains arc not so
largo as In prcyious month, Chicago being the most Important of these, but the very
large tneirsasu at Clsreiand, Detroit, Milwaukee andVTftdlanepolia give little indication of .
any setback to buataees. Every city In the Par West make more or lea gain over both
year with which comparison I made, and at com it ia extremely large, notably at Kansas
Oty, 8t Paul, Minneapolis, Omaha, Denver, Dec Moino and Stouz City, ( which points
basin conditions are said to be very satisfactory. On the Pacific Coast prosperity is
apparently well established, the large volume of commercial transactions being reflected In
the Increase shewn. The comparison Is made below of bank exchange by sections
covering three year , alio the average dally figures for the year to date ;

CATTLE The week starts out with a
very light run of cattle and every prospect
of a comparatively light run for the bal
ance of the week, so that the tone to the
market showed considerable Improvement,
and anything at all desirable In the beef
steer line commanded prices all of 102jl3o
higher than true close of last week. Tops
brought 16.05, which is the highest price
paid in over two months. There waa a
class of warmed-up and short-fed beeves
that showed very little Improvement over
last week's prices, as all classes of buyers
show a disposition to discriminate against
medium and common natives, as they much
prefer the Texas grassers, which are com
ing more freely every day. The general
market was active throughout, however,
and a good clearance was made.
The market for cows and heifers did not
show as much Improvement as the fat cat
tle trade, althousb atitiDlies were light and
the demand good. JJeSlrable butcher and
beef arailes found fa readv sale at steady
to strong prices, and even the medium and
common grades sold about as. well at, at
any time last week and the meager or rer -Ings
were all disposed of in good season.
Veal calves were about steady and there
was no particular change In the market
for bulls, staas and rough stock generally.
Yard traders were cleaned up pretty well
last week and there were very few stale
Blockers arid feeders In the pens this morn
Ing. Fresh offerings were also very llm
Ited and the market, while not overly ac
tlve, waa fully steady for anything at all
useful In this line. The volume of business
was small, however, and the demand com
paratively restricted.

crimination In favor of lights and butcher

kinds of hogs moving on the same .basis.
Rest lights sold only a nickel higher than
the bills, righ sales dropping to t.0a- -
It Is needles to add that tha market
was a little lower than at last week's close.
Declines of a nickel were the more fre
quent, but some business waa done at S$10a
lower figures. Total supply was limited,
killers bought freely from the start and an
early clearance waa made. Shippers picked
out a few loads, but their combined pur
chases did not exceed 20 per cent of the
receipts.
Today's . decline carries values to the
lowest level in several week. flogs have
sold locally at or below 1400 only on one
or two occasions since the high foint was
