Field club golfers walloped the Country club followers of the ancient gamea on their own greens Saturday afternoon by the narrow margin of one point. The day, was Ideal for golf and the 120 players worked with a vim to keep the honors for their team. Country club players who came In early In the afternoon presented strong scores and it looked for a time as though the match would be a walkaway for the Ben son players. At an early stage they were sixteen points ahead. Field club players soon evened up the score and then forged ahead. Honors were soon even again and when the last card was turned over to the scorers it waa found that the Field club had won by one point, leaving the Country club one down. Following the hard day which Champion Jack Johnson put In yesterday. finishing up last night with an exhibition in Dreamland rink, he felt entitled to a rest today In order to prepare for the strenuous week tomorrow. Johnson al ways likes to please his Sunday spectators with some fast work and he has a new stunt for tomorrow. Johnson, in order to show how solid his muscles are, allowed Marty Cutler last night to hammer his stomach as hard aa he could. He was asked today If he didn't feel some 111 effect from his treatment, and he replied: 'Not a bit of it. I am in such condition now that I could easily take a beating that would put any other man unconsci ous. ' I am going to win that fight. June 5.-(Special TeUsgram.) One hundred and twenty-seven sports men arrived here from England today on board the St. lxiuis, to see the Jeffries- Johnson prise fight In San Franclso, July The men will travel west across the continent from New Y'ork upon the News paper special. They will leave New York for the west on June 23. Herbert Harvey, member of the Na tional Sporting club of London, heads a party of twenty men from there and the suburbs. He said that before leaving here the party would visit a ball game at the Polo grounds, as many of the men never saw a real game of base bail. He added that the party would take an opportnunlty of seeing some horse racing before leaving for 'Frisco. They are desirous of viewing the metropolis and visiting Boston, Wash ington and other nearby cities. The party will be the guests of George Consldine and Wells Hawkes at Coney Is land tomorrow, after doing Chinatown In sightseeing automobiles. - Monday the mem bers will pass through the Great While way in automobiles. The Omaha Field club base ball team was defeated by the Omaha Gas Company team, by the score of 1 to 0, Saturday afternoon. The game was one of the most hotly con tested ever witnessed on the Field club grounds. The Gas Makers won because they played the better game of ball, al though at that honors were pretty evenly divided, as the score lndioates. Pitching honors were even. Adams and Morlarty each allowed but four hits, but the Gas 'Men got ' their hits when they counted most, and this explains their victory. Tliu fielding of Rogers and Bressman was of the spectacular order, a 'hard running catch made by the latter being of the sen sational kind. Madden and O'Brien starred in the Infield, the latter taking some al most Impossible cnunces, which accounts for his error column Crawford of the Gas Company pulled off a couple of catches in right field that bor- drd on the professional. Irving,1 the municipal -specialist of Chicago, yesterday, when he lectured at. the opera house in con junction with the Boosters' day program given by the Commercial dug of this city. Mr. Irving suggested several improvements for this city during his talk, all of which he deemed possible after studying condi tions here. Mr. Irving's address through out contained the reasons why various faults of smaller cities tend to retard the growth and advancement of those cities. FREMONT, Neb,, June 6 (Special.) James H. Peters, a pioneer who came to Nebraska in 1855, locating near Nlckersou, died at the residence of a daughter In Clearwater Friday at the age of 80. He took an active part in the early troubles with ludlans and was prominent in county affairs. His body will be brought to Nlck etson for burial, and the funeral w'ib held Monday. , Politically Mr. Peters wai a prohibitionist. He was an active mem ber of the Christian church.
