Alleged Indications that the comparative weakness of wheat at Dululh was, in part at least, the result f manipulation at Chicago Intended to utaden the effect of threatened further Miili.menta here from that port. The weather Is cooler throughout the north and central portions of the corn and wheat region and temperatures at or below freexlng were recorded at fourteen stations In the Minneapolis district. L A. WELSH, Local Forecaster, Weather Bureau. NKW YORK. May ll.-The persistence with which slocks were absorbed at the various price levels today had an Influence In stiffening speculstlve confidence and formed the tone of the market. Such con spicuous market leaders as the Hnrrlman Pacifies, Northern Pacific. Chesapeake Ohio and. at times. United States Steel, were held back by realising sales of tnls kind. These sales were renewed quite ac tively at the last and unsettled the closing tone considerably. The quieter tone of the wheat market today took the edge oft the e4fect of yesterday's sudden slump. There was a realisation that speculative maneuvers In that market shared with crop conditions In the causes for the action of the price. The after-effects of the govern ment crop report have been, however, to allay the most serious of the anxiety which was felt over the amount of damage done to the grain crops by the severe weather of the latter part of April. Current reports also point to constant Improvement In con ditions, especially In the spring wheat belt. Besides the growing Influence of the ag ricultural general prospect, the securities market is having the benefit of 'other gen eral considerations. The passing of the de pression caused by the succession to the British throne brought with It a sense of substantial relief which. It was felt, en titled the stock market to an upward reac tion. This Is an influence that passes by sympathy between the international mar kets. !t waa strengthened today by the abas ing of the money markets. The private dis count rate In Berlin was marked down a fraction and London cablet pointed to the imriiiioou oi a reauction in the ornelal dis count of the Bank of England tomorrow. In New York demand sterling touched 34.8S3."), the lowest price of the year, with Fume unequent recovery. By small ad ditional details, the main contention as to the Importance of the foreign aales of new securities Is coming to be verified. This forma a continuing Influence in favor nf the whole financial situation. A good deal of attention was Dnld to the copper metal market, and there were many rumors current of developments In that trade. Official Information of copper trans action! beyond the publication of the sta- i suca or tne copper Producers' associa tion la not to be had. The price of the metal advanced again here, but fell back In London. Last mnnth'a iirsa ei.mitt- Jlon was attributed mostly to the leading interest, and Its control waa said to have Increased sufficiently as a consequence to rnaoie ii ia exact the better prices from aome Of the recent huveia A imi,. better tone also was saW to be growing up In the Iron market. There was no Dai'licolar change In the general conditions surround ing the trade, and with a goori tiemaiiu from both local packers and eastern buy ers, the market was fairly active and fully steady as far as desirable cattle of all weights waa concerned. On the other nanu, the liberal offerings enabled buyers to be a little more discriminating In their pur chane and there was a general disposition to snatie prices more or less on tne nan fat and unfinished grades, and In many cases salesmen were compelled to take off rtjl0c. The general trade was anywhere from steady to 10c lower than ycstcrdtiy and the movement was quite brisk on this basis. As has been the c.ixe rieht along re cently, the offerings of cows and heifers were comparatively limited, not over twenty-five or thirty cars being on sale, and W'ith a good demand from all classes of buyers, the market was substantially the same as on yesterday. Fat heifers run 'I stronir and there was nlcnlv of IniHlll'V i. Hie thin cows and heifers nf good qnal.iy from feeder buyers. Medium and common grades were a little slow, owing to had re ports from eastern points, but the general market was about steady and a prettv early clearance was made. Veal calves were fully steady, and bulls, stags, etc., firm. Business In Blockers nnd feeders was rather light, as supply and demand were limited, tlood to choice light weight stuff commanded strong figures, while the ordi nary run of- light and medium weight steers and heifers were slow sale at un changed figures. LOCOMOTIVE'S ALLOTTED TASK Kxperled to Cover a Definite Mlleac flefnre It la F.ntltled tn Be tl erkaaled. When a locomollva Is built It is expected to mske a certain mileage, before It receives a general overhauling. When that over hauling Is done It Is again to make a defi nite mileage. Tho inodrrn passenger locomotive IS ex pected to cover IflO.OoO miles between gen eral "shoppings," intermediate repair being made at the various roundhouses. Responsibility for the failure of a locd niottv, to perform the work cut out for it Is easily fixed by means of a system Of records. The superintendent of shops Is responsible for all power cut out of servlca on ths road and placed Inside the shop grounds, and this responsibility does not end until the locomotive Is ready for serv ice again. From the time that it Is ready for strvlce until It Is once more cut out for repairs in ths shop the master me chanio shoulders the responsibility. Whin tha locomotive Is ready to leave the shops It Is Inspected Jointly by ths shop Inspector, under the superintendent of shops, and the Inspector working under the master mechanic. Every workman who had any part whatever In the handling of tha locomotive Is responsible to his Im mediate foreman, just as ths foreman la responsible to his superiors. In spite of the many intricate parts of locomotive the company records show few failures. An "engine failure" Is a delay of one minute or more to any train, pro vided It Is caused by a failure of tha ma chinery of the locomotive. Ths labor of every man who works for even an hour upon ft certain engine is charged to that engine, each mechanic re cording his labor upon a slip of paper known as ths dally time certificate, which In turn is certified to by the general time, keeper. The records of the road enable the officials to show tha exact cost of labor and material for each mile that a locomotive travels or each ton hauled. In the case of collisions or wrecks, where the fauld Is not one of defective workman ship or material, the locomotive may enter the general shops for rebuilding, even though It may not have completed tha mileage assigned to tt, and no responsi bility attaches to those on whom It would otherwise fall. Tha locomotive Is simply repaired and Is allowed to complete the mileage originally assigned to It. When a locomotive Is brought into ths Shops for work It Is first stripped by the men who comprise what Is known as the stripping gang. This gang Immediately lakes off such parts of the engine as are necessary for the Job. The parts to be repaired are cleaned tn a vat and the work la then distributed among the vsrlous employes of the machine and blacksmith departments, each part when repaired to be returned to the erect ing side of tha shop, to bo mounted again on tha locomotive by tha date on which It Is scheduled to go on the road. The dates are posted lu a conspicuous place, conven ient to each repair gang. New York Her ald. IT HAPPENED IN ARKANSAS Jndge Hnspends His Bible Lesson and Trachea Manners tn Hla Neighbors.
