CH1CAUO, April 25. Wheat prices closed strong at an advance of lrom Vac to Vic today. Corn- started strong and fell. away on heavy selling, more than recovering losses late tn the session. Oats displayed tm same trend a wheat and corn. Pro-vi-lons showed symptoms of flrmnota early, but closed from lf,c to 3'-'V4c down. At the outset wheat quotations advanced. Attracted by the upturn, sellers crowded the pit and caused an abrupt decline, which carried May down lc, July lc to lVc and September lc from the early high mark. Later In the session renewed reports of oumaKe 'to the growing fields Inspired a b-tttr quality of buying and prices" ad vanced.. Cold weather conditions, caused a rush, of buyer to besiege the corn pit at' the outset and corn prices advanced all around, only to be met by quantities of grain thrown into the pit by Beliefs, causing prices to sag. WELSH, Local Forecaster. Weather Bureau. NEW YORK, April 2f. Speculative senti ment In the stock market today waa more depressed than ever after the failure of the momentary rally during the day to hold. The recuperative power of the market proved extremely moderate and shortlived. The action of the wheat market was Waken as discrediting the worst fears of damage to grain by the cold wave. Account had to fie taken, though, of the known disposi tion of holders of old grain to liquidate their holdings and to take advantage of strong spots to do so. Support centered on United States Steel to the accompaniment of renewed predic tions of great posltlvenss that the dividend would be Increased to 6 per cent at tomor row's meeting of directors. New York bankers would regret any de velopment that would encourage deferred liquidation of Interior bank loans for with holding grain from the market. The ex tended loan position of Interior banks Is a feature of the situation that Is not liked. Shipments of currency from the Interior are said to be due to scarcity of New York exchange and to low deposits. Meantime Chicago bankers report that country bank deposits are being drawn upon to meet land payments, including large sums from Cana dian lands. The chaotic conditions In the cotton mar ket have their disturbing side from both the stock market and the financial point of view. The difficult position of the cot ton shorts has Induced repurchase of cotton tn Liverpool and reshlpment here at a loss. On top of this complication comes a rush or Liverpool brokers to New York to make fresh purchases Influenced by the appear ance of cotton bills of lading abroad for which no cotton shipments exist. Paralysis of the cotton Industry is a dreaded conse quence. Oold engagements today amounted to 111,000,000. to which Is to be added $1,500,000 engaged last week for shipment tomorrow. Ten millions of the aggregate goes out to morrow. Tho 15,000,000 engagement by the Guaranty Trust company exceeds any known precedent for an individual gold export. Tomorrow's $10,000,000 aggregate seems to be a record outgo by a single steamsnip, dui iu.shi.iso arrived here on November 7, 1SW7, for the relief of the cur rency famine growing out of the panic. The Insistent assertion that the United States Steel dividend would be placed on a 5 per cent basis tomorrow- seemed to be regarded as of doubtful efficacy as a sup porting iacior ror tne general market. Other buyers Totals CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morn ing were very liberal for the first of tne week, showing considerable gain over uo week ago. Other market points were well supplied, but the markets as a whole were not overly encouraging, in tact, tne generally was dull and the morning was well advanced before very mucn ousiiiw had been transacted. The supply of stockers and feeders was very moderate and they were the first cattle in the yards to sell. The prices paid for the better grades of feeders were prac tically steady with last week's tslose. In fact, there was no material change in the market for that kind of cattle, and the trade was without any especially new or Interesting features. Heavy feeders were dull, especially ' to ward the close, and possibly a little lower. The handy light cattle were In -best de mand on part of packers and they did not show much change as compared with last week, the market being about steady. On the . other hand, .heavy cattle were very slow and' neglectad and anywhere from weak to as much as lOo lower. Reports from all points Indicated a moderate de mand for heavy cattle, this market being no exception to the general rule. Cows and heifers, especially those of de sirable quality, were in fair demand and they did not show any material change, the market being Just about steady on that kind of stock throughout the day.
