stocks today proved disappointing to thoee
who organised the upward movement of
prices lait woe. Kven this over'tne week
end brought In some selling orders, through
oommiseion houses, leaving amall opoor
tunity for the bulge of last week to dis
tribute their holdings to the expected new
buyers. An exception was found In the
Hill and Oonld stocks, which advanced In
the early dealings on the strength of re
ports that a working agreement had been
made by which traffic from the Hiil roads
would be shipped over . the Gould roads
west of Denver.
The wintry weather In the west since
the stock market closed Saturday waa
made the ground for fear of damage to
fruit and vegetables In thoee regions. There
was some selling of stocks of that account.
Assurances that no serious harm had been
done to the grain crop mitigated the effect
of the news.
The rurther downward course of wheat
was evidence of satisfaction with the new
crop conditions. It was regarded as pro
viding also that holdera of old wheat were
Inclined to lliuidi.te the holdings and not
wait lunger 4n the hope of higher prices.
The Influence of the decline In wheat was
not effective In the foreign exchange mar
ket to prevent further engagements of
mud to oiiiidon this week. The easing of
the local money market with the strength
ening of the banks' condition last week
seema to have facilitated the further outgo
of gold. Eatimates of the probable outgo
have been moderated with the stronger
position attained by the Bank of England.
The dull and drooping tone of iron and
the steps being taken to curtail the output
give a turn of depression to speculative
sentiment.
Predictions of a coming Increase In the
dividend on I'nited States Steel do not
avail to curtail this sentiment. Copper trade
movements also were regarded aa unsatis
factory. A minor cause of disappointment
was a failure of predictions, which were
made -ery poel'lvely last week, that the
corporation lax law would be declared un
constitutional by the supreme court today.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par
value. tl.ft2s.flQ0. Vnited States bonds were
unchanged on call.

CATTLE The week opened aut with a
comparatively small run, teas than 2.000
head, and the quality of the offerings was
hardly up to last week's average. Not
withstanding the very bearish tone to the
advices from eastern markets the small
local aupply and the good local demand
enabled salesmen to realize somewhat
stronger prices than prevailed the last part
of the week and the trade was active from
start to finish. A bunch of choice beeves
brought Ik. 00 and anything carrying a rea
sonable amount of flesh and quality sold
for 17.00 or better. The general tone to the
trade waa strong throughout and an early
clearance waa made.
Tha market for cows and heifers waa
also . active and stronger, as there were
only about twenty-five loads on sale and
both, local packers and outside buyers had
good orders to fill. Choice fat heifers aold
up to 26.75, or about ss high as at any
time this season, and anything at all use
ful in the way of butcher or beef atock
commanded ready sale at good strong
prices. '
There was not a great deal of activity In
the stocker and feeder market, as tha de
mand was not particularly urgent and
fresh supplies wera rather small. "For tha
