Suicide Says Jury. '
HANNIBAL, Mo., April IS. Although
coroner's Jury this afternoon returned a
verdict of suicide or accidental death In
the case of Mrs. Gertrude Maxwell, a
wealthy widow who was found dead in a
trunk at her home near Palmyra today,
relatives are not convinced that she ended
her own life and declare they will conduct
a more thorough Investigation than that
of the Jury.
County Treasurer Wade Maxwell, a son,
declares his mother was murdered and Is
working on this theory. Friends of the
woman scout the suicide theory and be
lieve her death was accidental. She was
of a timid disposition, they say, and In
their belief, became frightened and hid
herself In the trunk, dying froraveuffoca
tlon. Mrs. Maxwell, who was about 60 years
old, was fully dressed. Her knees were
bent so that her chin rested on them. At
times she bad lived with her only daughter.
Miss Mazle Maxwell, a teacher in the
Palmyra school.
Last Wednesday she telephoned a physi
cian that she was 111 and he prescribed
for her over the telephone. Coroner
O'Donnell ordered an autopsy to be made
on the body.
The coroner's Jury that held an Inquest
Into the death of Mrs. Maxwell this after
noon brought. In the following verdict: .
"We the Jury find that Mrs. Gertrude
Maxwell came to her death by getting Into
a trunk and closing It, where her body
was found at 8 a. tn., April 12."
The trunk was open when the coroner's
Jury viewed It. In the bottom were several
rags which were appaiently saturated with
carbolic acid. The acid stains on the
rags were the chief evidence upon which
the Jury reached Its conclusion.
Testimony revealed that Mrs. Maxwell
was worth between $30,000 and -$10,000.

Effort to Break Down Defense
of Albert Wolter.
NEW YORK, April 13. To break down a
possible defense of Albert Wolter, accused
of the murder of Ruth Wheeler, the body
of the girl was exhumed today and another
autopsy held. Wolter's lawyer had raised
the point that the remains found on Wol
ter's premises have not been proven those
of the Wheeler girl and that It has not
betrl proven a murder actually was com
mitted. The bones found In the flreplac
will form one of the state's exhibits at
the trial.
