turned from a trip of several day through
the southern part of his district, comprle
ing Oklahoma and Kansas, meeting the
new high officials of his company, who)
were passing through that ectlon of tb
country.
The principals of the parly were Ti. J.
Hall, chairman of the executive oommtttee;
B. Brooks, general manager, both of New
York, and T. P. Coolt, general superintend-,
ent at Chicago. Mr. Hall Is also vice presi
dent of the American Telephone and Tele
graph company.
The object of the trip was to perfect a
closed co-operation and traffic arrangement
In the wet between the Western TTnloB
and Bell Telephone aystems, the Idea being
to develop the service so that at any time
of the day or night, from any telephone, a
message can be Bent to any part of the
world y the Joint use of telephone, tele
graph and cable wires, and an answer re
ceived promptly at the sending point with
out the neceselty of the ender moving
from his office or hi home, the (tender to
have the coat of the service collected at the
end of the month when the telephone In
strument rental Is paid.
Mr. Hall and Mr. Brook both emphasised
on the trip that the telephone and tele
graph companies will continue In the fu
ture, as In the past. e pa rate and distinct
organliatlons.
Mr. Nelson will leave next week for Chi
cago and New York for a further confer
ence with higher officials of the company
regarding the above and various other mat
ters, but say he expect that Mr. Hall. 4
Mr. Brooks and Mr. Cook will visit Omaba ,
soon In order to complete detAtin of the '
traffic arrangement described with the Ne
braska Telephone company and also with
the view of personally looking Into the
general telegraph situation at Omaha and
Its tributary territory and to arrange for

Uncle Sam. In the person of Postmaster
Thomas, will have his' postoffice open
every morning at 5 o'clock, from April 1
to November 1. This concession I made for
the accommodation of business houses that
want to get their mall aa early In the
day as possible. It will be available for
those only having lock boxes.
Postmaster Thomas does not promise to
bo on hand himself, at that unseemly hour,
but will have his big front doors open.

The Board of County Commissioner, sit
ting Thursday In committee of the whole,
heard an appeal from Andrew J. Donahoe,
president of Central Labor Union, and other
trades union members for the appointment
of a special Inspector of steel construction
on the court house building.
The committee did not take formal action,
but three members Commissioners Plckard,
Bedford and Grant expressed themselves
as opposed to the proposition, which la
therefore likely to be voted down.
Fred Brunlng came to bat with his un
failing motion to refer to a committee and
delay action. Commissioner Trainor was
not present. John I.atenser, architect of
the building, was at the meeting.
Before the committee of the 'whole sat,
a regular meeting of the board was held, It
being the last day of the month. Pay rolls
wero approved and a number of claims
allowed.
A resolution was approved appointing
Albert A. Maxwell Justice of the peace In
Benson precinct, to fill a vacancy. A
score of residents of the neighborhood had
petitioned for Mr. Maxwell' appointment
