The dften of the chapter of St. Peter has'
recently reorganized and arranged tor show
the so-called treasure of the basilica, which
consists of all the church vestments, uten
sils and objects of adornment thst belong
to the basilica of St. Peter. This collection
is valuable, as each object has its own his
tory dating back many centuries, and in
course of time It has suffered many vicissi
tudes.' The treasure practically dates from
apostolic times, since a church was built
on the site of the Vatican soon after the
martyrdom of St. Peter, and the early
Christians who worshiped in it adorned it
with votive offerings and enrlohed It by
valuable gifts. Notts of these anolent
objects, has, however, survived to the
present day, as very probably they were
destroyed and scattered during the perse
cutions of the Christians.
During the fifth and sixth centuries ths
popes again formed the treasure of the
church, which the gifts of the barbarism
kings and chiefs increased, but In ths year
846 the Saracens despoiled the church and
its treasure and only a few objects were
saved, among them being a golden cross
given by the emperor, Justin II. Pops
Leo IV. again formed the treasure, ilch
soon became celebrated as the most vari
able collection in tho world, since the pll
grims who flocked to Rome to venerate
the tomb of the apostle not only brought
gifts and votive offerings with them but
actually left their richest Jewels and clothes
fn th) church. Besides every cardinal
and all the persons of prominence who
visited Rome made rich donations and
each pope presented vestments. Jewels and
gold and silver chalices. Still during
troubled times the treasure was pillaged,
especially during the sack of time In 1527
and as late as 1796, when Napoleon ex
acted a heavy contribution from Plus VI L
after tho peace of Tolentlno.
One would think that little has been left
of this valuable collection, which truly de
served the name of treasure, but so great
was its value and so considerable the num
ber of objects It contained that oven today,
despite Its repeated spoliations. It is tho
richest church treasure in the world. Ttie
collection Includes a dalmatlo presented to
tho church by Charles ths Great, which is1'
richly embroidered and . studded with
precious stones; two candelabra of gilt
bronze by Pollaiuolo, six massive sliver
condlesticks, tho work of Benvenuttf Cel
lini; the valuable gold cross of Justin II.,
silver statues of ths apostles, gold chalices
and pyxes, Innumerable church vestments,
and, besides, many other minor objects,
twelve stars of brilliants worth several
million francs, which were given by Cath
olics throughout the world on ths oocaslon
of tho Jubilee of ths Immaculate Concep
tion. Tho treasure of St. Petsr belongs to
