STEEL CHARGES PROVE FACTOR
Sentiment Affected by Accusation
and by lOlectloa of Congressman
In Maaaaehaaetta, which May

NEW YORK, March 2S.-The early prom
ise today of an Inert holiday market was
not borne out by the later developments,
when Inceraslng pressure of stocks for sale
carried prices comprehensively downward.
H was asserted that a large part of the
selling of stocks was for Huston account
and might be In pursuance of a speculative
rvmpulgn.
The array of charges againat the United
Statea Steel corporation presented to the
attorney general by the American Federa
tlon 'of Labor was another factor In mak
ing the day's sentiment. Ho. also, was the
result of the election In the Fourteenth
Massachusetts district of a congrexsinun.
The Boston selling wa accompanied by pro
fessions of apprehension that revision of
the tariff would be made an active Issue
of the coming political campaign- with the
traditionally unsettling effect on securities
markets.
The results of the New York bond sale
did not create enthuslanm a they were
studied In their larger bearings. This feel
ing was emphasized by the renewed de

the new- 4 receding to 10U The

incident' of the day was the

In Reading waa accompanied by rumors
that Baltimore & Ohio holdings 'of that
stock had been sold. The recent acquisition
of Hocking Valley by Chesapeake-& Ohio
has served to Increase credence given to
rumors of other deals. -
The persistence of ' the International

CATTLE Receipts or c-altie today num
bered 221- cars, making the total for the
tnree days this week 17,212 head, tne
largest three days' ruri experienced at this
point in a long time and larger than for
the corresponding period of a year ago
by over 7,000 head.' At the same time most
other market points have had liberal runs
of cattle bo that available supplies this
week have been larger than usual, taking
the country a a whole. While the demand
ha been very good It was apparent thl
morning that buyer wer not ao anxloua
for supplies a they have been and there
was not so much life nd strength to the
trade at any point, "In ' fact there waa a
lowing up to the trade al along the line.
wnen buyers and seller got together on
a trading basis, beef steers of good quality
generally sold In about the same notches
as yesterday. The trade was at no time
very active, but still th better grade of
cattle - kept changing hands and wer
pretty well cleaned up In fair season. As
high as 88.20 was raid for riant good beeves.
The medium grade of cattle were slow all
the morning at prlcea that were anywhere
from weak to a shade lower.
Cows and halfers followed very closely
alter beer steers, th good kinds command
lng ateady prices and the Inferior grades
being slow at a little lower,
Stockers and feeder were not such free
sellers aa yesterday, the wire edge being
off the market, but still the best cattle
commanded about steady prices with other
weak to a little lower. As hieh is 17 25 was
paid for hayfeds to go back in the country,
this being the highest prices paid so far
lor cattle to reed.

SHKEP-A shesD and lamb market devoid
of record-breaking sales, would be re
garded a a tame affair this enon. It
was the same old story In the mutton pens
this morning. Several records were broken
on a quotably strong market Supply waa
normal, but demand was urgent AS ever.
anu practically everytning waa douihi

Lamb trade looked to be a little higher In
spots, the same ss yesterday, but th bulk
of business was done on a generally strong
basis. The Adair Mexican that went at
110.36 yesterday were marked up a nickel
and moved readily at tl) advance. A few
other lot In th fleece also passed the

suDDly. as usual, tnet with a keen demand
and easily. sold at the customary fl spread,
a string of fleeceloss westerns going at
W.35. There I no precedent, of course,
ror any of the sales anove noted, tieavy
lamba ware a trifle slow, but there was
little chanoe for strong descrlmlnatlon and
everything sold to advantage.
What has been said about the lamo mar
ket would apply equally well to the sheep
trade. The growing scarcity of good ewes,
wether and yearling has naturally served
to sharpen demand and competition has
been very keen on th mor desirable
grade. A shipment of Mexican yearlings
