FtuntI of New York and George Sherwood Eddy, three of the leading speakers at the Laymen's Missionary con vention In Omnha, addressed a mass meet ing at the Broadway Methodist church and were greeted by one of the largest au diences ever assembled In that auditorium. Every sest was occupied long before the hour announced for the service and every foot of standing room was likewise oc cupied. The speakers told of the missionary work being done by Americans In Turkey, Ind!a and the Philippines and the need ot proper support for the work which Is being carried on by the missionaries. Rev. Mr. Merrill spoke at length on the massacres In Armenia and the work that Is being ac complished by the missionaries throughout Turkey. Dr. Stunt gave an exceedingly Interesting description of the work accom plished during the nine years the t'nlted States has had control of the Philippines. More has been accomplished In those nine years than has ever been accomplished by any other country In a like period In any part of the world, declared Dr. Stunts. Mr. Eddy, who with his wife Is devoting his life and wealth to the betterment of the benighted natives of India, told of the awful conditions prevailing In that famine stricken country. In the morning Mrs. Eddy spoke at St. Paul's Episcopal church on "The Women of India," telling of the frightful condition which prevail owing to the custom of child marriages. Mrs. Eddy said that there are over 2,000,000 girls under 10 years of age married to men from 26 to 60 years old and that there were thousands of child widows In India, who are under B years of age. At the invitation of the president, Mrs. Ed Canning, Mrs. Eddy, will address the Woman's auxiliary of St. Pnul's church at a special meeting this a fa moon at 4:30 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Emmet Tlnley on Willow avenue. School Board of Council Bluffs is Democratic Three New Member. Take Place of Eetiring Republicans Tinley Slated as President. When the Board of Education reorganizes this evening It will, for the first time In the history of Council Bluffs, be entirely democratic In makeup. All members of the new board are affiliated with tho demo cratic party. The three retiring members are republicans. Before the board reorganises the old board will go through the formality of canvassing the vote cast at the school election a week ago, when the democrats i,wept the platter clean, electing their three candidates for school directors and re electing Oeorge S. Davis as treasurer of the school district. Following the canvassing of the vote and the announcement of the election of the democratic ticket the new members, Frank C. Hendricks, John I. Luta and Theodore N. Peterson, will take the seats which will be vacated by W. H. Klllpack, T. J. Shugart and S. S. Elliott. It Is not ex pected that Mr. Shugart will be present, ss he has removed to Kansas. Oeorge S. Davie will not commence his new term as treasurer until July 1 and In tho meantime will handle the funds of tho school district urder his present tenure of office. The first business of the new board will be to elect a president and 'It Is said that Emmet Tlnley will again be honored with this position, providing he Is willing to accept It. In the event that he declines It Is understood that the honor will fall to George A. Schoedsack. The new prel dent will then appoint the standing com mittees for the year and tho board will then be ready to do business. Ihe annual statement of J. J. Hughes. rcretary of the Board of Education, shows that It took $160,663.00 to run tho public schools of Council Bluffs for the fiscal year Just closed. Salaries paid teachers amounted to $95,858.14 and this was natu rally the largest Item of expense. The new building at Oak street and Broadway cost upwards of $22,000 and Is nn Item which will not enter the expense of the schools the coming year. The sum of $8,851.83 was paid In Interest on building bonds. John E. Anderson, a veteran railroad man, died yesterday morning at th homo rf his daughter, Mrs. Barbara Tucker, 1130 Fourth avenue. Mrs. Tucker, who la a teacher at the Second avenue school. Is the only surviving child. The son. John E. Anderson, was burled Wednesday of last week, his death resulting from an accident In the Northwestern railroad yards. Thu shock of his son's death prostrated the father, who was 74 years of age, and has tened his end. Mr. Anderson was born In Forfar, Scot land, March 19, lMfl. He came to Council Bluffs when the Northwestern railroad en tered the city, as foreman of the car de partment, and remained with that road for thirty years. In 18S1 ha entered the employ of the Union Pacific and at the time of his death was on the pension roll of that rail road. Coal Vein Fonnd at Lehigh. LAKE CITY, la., March 21. (Special.) A fine vein of coal has been discovered at Lehigh, went of this city, on the Crooked Creek Railroad and Coal company's land. near their present mine No. 9, the vein proving to be the Tyson vein, which Is considered to be one of tha best grades of coal found In Iowa. AMES Mrs. Alice Dynes-Feullng, head cf the Domestic Economy department of Iowa State college, has resigned, effective September 1. CLEAR LAKE The Commercial olub of this city today started a movement to raise $3,000 with which to build six miles of model country road leading Into Clear Lake. Ureat enthusiasm attends the effort and It la believed this money will be sub scribed within a day or two. HARLAN Word has been received here of the death of Claus Peterson Hodne at Council Bluffs. He waa for many years a resident of this county, but removed to Council Bluffs last fall. The funeral serv ices were conducted yesterday from the Norwegian Lutheran churoh and Interment waa in the Lutheran cemetery. ROCKPORD Dr. Kloln of Louisville, Ky., who while here yesterday made ar rangemonta to build and equip a $26,000 hospital, fell from a passenger train while leaving the city last night and had both feet crushed. He was not found untlll three hours later. He was thrown from the platform of the smoking car. He was re moved to a Waterloo hospital. HARLAN Henry Stuhr, an old settler of Shelby county, died at his home near Botna yesterday after a period of falling health. Mr. Stuhr came to this county as one of the pioneer settlers and has lived here ever since. He was born In Holsteln. Oermany, in 1S33. To mourn his death he leaves a wife and twelve children. Rov. Hohson of the United Brethren church of Kotna gave the funeral address and the remains were laid to rest in the Mannlnr cemetery.
