Nearly every aihool teacher in Omaha and South Omaha, and others Interested In a movement for play-ground, attended tha meeting of the Aasoclated Charities, Fri day afternoon In the city hall. The council chamber was filled and extra seats had to be. provided for latecomers. Dr.' Luckey of the University of Ne braska, addressed the merlin on "Shall Oramlxed Tlay Be Made a Regular Part c((l'a Public School Curriculum?" alldren should have ornatiized play," said Dr. Luckey. "It 1b natural that they Should have play, but It Is also natural that their play be organiz-d and supervised In a manner that will get for th-m the most benefit "Why do normal children dislike school? Because under tha present system, the chools are merely mental factories where knowledge U crammed Into the heads of tha atudents. The number of subjects taught might be reduced and those left In the curriculum should be vitalized. This could ba don. by organized play, in which the teacheia would systematically Inspire the pupils to nap the entire benefits of recreation. The teachera also would Im prove their u.efulnoss by resting a few hours a day from Intensive brain labor. Read Katlre Boy ta School. "I would suggest that the entire boy be sent to school; that part of him which needs development only possible from play as well as that part of him that crys out against study slone. 1 would have the school days from four to six hour long, according to the age of th children, and have the term tn months, l would have the first hour and one-half of the day devoted to organized play and the last hour and one-half of the day devoted to organised play. Intervening between these periods would be the time for Intellectual work. I believe under such a system, the health of tha children would be greatly promoted and Instead of the boy arising in tha morning with dislike for school he would be tager to gel there, for he would know that he was going to have hi play as well as his work. "Ona-slded development means subjects for tha Jails and almshouses. The need of tha hour Is for large-minded, balanced men." Superintendent Davidson also spoke In favor of public playgrounds.
