AMERICAN TOBACCO RISES AGAIN Roost Prompts Relief that "apreaae (wrt Dvelsloat Will Favor the Cosnpaay Copper Ifewa Cheerf at. NEW YORK. March 1R, The steady up lift of prices In today's stock market and the Indifference shown to any but favor able developments made an Impressive demonstration of convicted hopefulness on Ute par.t of taker of stocks. Some part of the buying was attributed to a short Interest overtaken by the con tinued recovery In prices. The persistence of the demand for the principal long stocks was taken to Indicate satisfaction with conditions on the part of some Interests well equipped with resources to express their confidence. A further rise In American Tobacco stock in the outside markets kept alive predic tions that the supreme court decision In the tobacco case would be In favor of the company. Citations from the president's speech before the Trafflo club In Chicago were used as evidence of fairness In the attitude of the government authorities to wards the railroad corporations. Strength of special stocks traceable to Individual cause helped the general ad vance by sympathy. The rise In Norfolk A Western wss a noticeable case In point. This was accompanied by rumors of an Increase In the dividends and of a guar antee by the Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis. There was published during the day cheerful views of the copper trade from the president of the Amalgamated Copper company, which served as a stimulus to the buying of that stock. Rumors of divi dend Increases applied to some other stocks, Including United States Steel. Estimates of the week's currency move ment promised a gain In cash by the hanks, owing to excess of receipts from the In terior over shipments. The higher rates for time money during the week have operated to attract funds to this center. There was a relaxation in the London discount rate today from the violent advances caused by the rise In the bank rate. The demand, however, at the pres ent time is so good that buyers were out In the yards early In the morning, appar ently eager to pick up the few loads that were to . be had. Beef steers sold very freely at good strong prices, the day's receipts being soon dis posed of. This means that the market la now 4050o higher than a week ago. The market has been higher every day this week. In fact,- a few cattle have sold the highest since July, 1908. Cows and heifers commanded good steady prices today and the supply was all cleaned up In good season. The cow market has also been advanoed rapidly this week, being a big 2Sc higher and In many Cases 25fr40c higher than one week ago. There were only a few feeders here today, but they sold very readily at good strotff prices. A string of Utah cattle sold up to $6.90. The feeder market has been wildly higher this week, an advanoe of at least 25o be I nil mode, and In many cases cattle have sold a great deal higher than that. McWado, the wealthy collector of Duluth, condemned In a recent lecture American pugnactousness. "My morning paper," sold he, "tells me how A. breaks B.'s jaw because he hap pens to stumble over B.'s foot In a street car. Arrested for assault, he says: 'Ths man who crosses his legs In a crowded car deserves a licking.' "That sort .of ruffianism Is Intolerable. Yet In our nervous Irritability, due to our climate and to the breakneck pace of our business life, we are continually squabbling and fighting." Mr. McWade smiled. "Only yesterday," he said, "I heard of a copper miner who was hurrying homeward, worn out with too hard a day's work, when he came upon another Ohap under a street lamp. " 'Hello,' said he, 'are you Dick Sweeny of Two Harbors?' "The other chap, who was aiso fagged to death, snarled out: " 'No, I ain't Dlojc Sweeny of Two Harbors.', "Then the first chap shot out his fist and landed a heavy left on the other's Jaw. " 'Well, take that, then,' said he, 'for beln' so like him.' "New York Tribune, , , A Bible Nam. The late Bishop Galller was once asked to baptize a negro baby boy. "Name this child," he said, addressing; Mrs. Jackson, the mother of ths black mite. "Hallud." "That's a strange name, Mrs. Jackson, remarked the bishop hesitatingly. "Scrlpter name," rejoined the happy mother, with a confident grin. "I never saw It In the Blbic." "Why, bishop, how kin yuh Stan' uj dar klddln' a olr Ignorant nlggah talk I Is? Yuh says dat name whenevah yuh says de Lawd's prayer 'Hallud be Thy name.." Success Magazine. Wool Market. LONDON, March lS.-The offerings at the wool auction sales today amounted to 11 M bales.
