and reservoir with a new system of clar
ifying. "Having done so much work for the puri
fication of water supplied to New Jersey
and Connecticut cities as well as cities In
other states." said Dr. Leal, 'of course I
feel confidence In the efficacy of this pro
cess. It Is really the killing of germs by
releasing oxygen In the water. The bleach
ing powder used Is an oxychlorlde. We use
tanks to make a solution, which Is not very
strong, and a certain quantity of this solu
tion Is used In the settling basins, depend
ing on the quantity of water to be treated."
'After breakfast at the Omaha club, Dr.
Leal at once proceeded to make a personal
inspection of the reservoirs and settling
basins, going first to Florence. Accompany
ing him were 'Health Commissioner Con
nell. City Chemist Crowley, City Bacteri
ologist Langfelt and General Manager
Fairfield of the Water company. The ex
pert will examine ' carefully Into all the
conditions In any way affecting the water
supply, and said It would probably be to
night before hi? will be ready to formulate
his conclusions.

of the city bacteriologist and the city

Those show a very decided falling off In
the number of bacteria in the water. The
samples analyzed were taken at the city
hall, at the High school, at Twenty-fourth
and Ames and two or three other points
widely scattered. Dr. Langfeldt also re
ports' that his examinations, now under
way, promise to give practically a similar
result.
Dr. Leal will not only give attention to
these latest reports, but will go back for
perhaps a month, to make himself thor
oughly familiar with the condition of the
water during that time.
Mayor Dahlman's Opinion.
"Talking of the water being responsible
for typhoid fever,' I am Inclined to doubt
that Is tho cause," said Mayor Dahlmbn.
"In my neighborhood, a friend's boy has
been 111 for five weeks, but no one else In
the family, and no one else In the Im
mediate neighborhood that I know of, has
the fever. That boy very likely was In
fected somewhere else than at home. The
troublo here In Omaha Is that a great deal
of publicity has been given to something
that is not really an epidemic. While
away from home I have found typhoid is
more prevalent than here, but not so much
is being said about It."

AT TULSA'S SPRING TERM
Department of Justice Experts . to
Override Attempts to Delay Made '
In Interest of Defense.
The , Department of Justice expects to
bring the case of the United States against
Governor Charles N. Haskell of Oklahoma
to trial at the early spring term of the
federal courts at Tulsa, Okla.
- Special Assistant Attorney General S. R.
Rush will assist In the trial of the case,
which la known as the Muskogee Town lot
deal, and In which Governor Haskell and a
number of other defendants have been
twice Indicted. These Indictments have been
fought bitterly and the first one was
quashed on a technicality, but a re-lndlik-ment
followed shortly afterwards. The
Haskell Interests have sought every means
j delay the trials, by charging that the
grand Jury was packed against them, and
even going so far as to charge the govern
ment attorneys with all sorts of crimes and
that the prosecution of the case was but
a determined persecution of " Governor
Haskell and his friends for political pur
