NEW YORK, Feb. U.-When the ener
gies of the speculation had begun to show
signs of flagging today they were revived
by the resumption of the strorvsT upward
movement in Reading. On enormous trans
actions the price rose to 17Z. only a shade
more than a point below its record price
touched In the speculation era of latit year.
The general list was slow to respond to
these developments In Reading and the
sympathetic strength was not uniform or
all-embracing. Speculative sentiment con-
mirs to reel the relief of the passing of
immediate apprehension over the antl -corporation
question. A factor In this belief
the cliaracter of the amendments nro-
poaed for the bill to extend the scope of
the Interstate commerce law. These, it
as felt, were calculated to allow latitude
to the financial exigencies of railroad cor
porationa. Incoming reports of renewed
torm blockades throuich the - west and
southwest did not Interfere with the rise In
prloes. Special Interest attached to a re
port of a large reduction in the St. Paul
working force. Reports of an Intended en
try of the Vanderbllt connection Into Bal
timore through the western Maryland, and
of Chesapeake A Ohio deslana towards
Hocking Valley had their effect on the
special stocks involved.
Preliminary estimates of the week's cur
rency movement indicated a large gain In
ash in the banks, In spite of the million
nd a half of aroada shinned to Arrentlna
today. The movement of gold from Lon-
on to Paris aroused the Interest nf New
York bankers as an Indication th.it Parla
is calling home credits from the Ixindon
marltt. There was a rise in the private
Iscount rate in Berlin.
Profit-taking sales made some impression
on the market at the advances and ac
counted for the Irregular tone at the closing.

NEW TORK. Feb. 18.-Closlng quotations
on mining stocks were:
HOGS The situation In the hog vnrdf
this morning was again decidedly bulltsh
and buyers wasted little time In filling
their -orders. It waa reasonably active
market from the opening, with prices
easily strong as compared with yesterday's
best time or Just about a nickel higher
than yesterday's average. All of the early
arrivals, or In other words, In the neigh
borhood of 5J loads, were sold on this
basis. Total rsceiptssvere only normal, 87
cant being estimated.
A considerable portion of the hoga sold
frcm $8.S6 to 18 95. with the long string st
and above 18 90. Several loads were g.iod
cnourh to command Stt durlnir, early
rounds. Tctterday's bulk It will be re
membered, sold from SS.S0 to 18.90 and the
bulk a week ago went at 88.55tfft.68,.
Receipts thus far this, week have been
rather liberal than otherwise., over 60.000
head being received, as compared with ap
proximately the same number for the
same days last week snd the corresponding
norlod of last year. Shipping demand has
been especially brisk and the local outlet
has also been broad on most days, with
the result that prtccis have advanced fully
20c ovr last week's close.
As waa. the esse yesterday, th lata mar
ket was not so-good as the early, being
at least 6e lower, with buyers not at all
anxious for the hogs, even at that decline.
Still, the market closed little better than
yesterday's late market.
