Heavy loss from Imperfect seed threatens

800,000. Grain men and agrleulturlsti are
generally aware of the situation and urge
that the farmers make tests of their seed
and take special precaution that the fields
hall be painted with fertile and productive
grain. The Immediate source of danger to
the crop Ilea In the effect that the weather
conditions have had upon the grain of the
state from which the seed for the spring
planting will be chosen. The presence of
much moiature through a wet fall and hard
winter freesea Is believed to have rendered
sterile a ALrge percentage of the grain,
making It totally unfit for planting pur
poses, or at least so weakening It that the
plants reproduced will prove unproductive.
The remedy Ilea In germination tests of
each ear to be used for seed. The seed
growers of the state are now making, or
have completed, tests by, which the sterile
grain Is eliminated. That but a small per
centage of the state's grain Is produced
from the stocks of the seed growers signi
fies the Importance of this same work by
the farmer who grows his own seed.

It is estimated that the loss to the state
from bad seed could easily reach $15,000,000
on the year's crop. This figure is based
on the presumption chat one ear out of
every six planted should be bad. It Is said
that some of the tests hay shown that In
many localities the percentage of bad seed
la even higher. Nebraska's corn acreage
fpr the last year was 6,500,000. If one-sixth
of this land should be rendered Inefficient
and practically Idle by planting with Im
perfect seed the Inevitable result would be
loos of the use .of more than a million
acres. ' The lpss, however, would not end
there. The cultivation of the fields would
cover alike the fertile and the unfertile,
hills and' It would .be wasted then by the
same rath) In which the crop failed.
Students of the situation attribute the
conditions existing to both bad weather,
which directly affected the year's crop, and
a degeneracy in some of the grain Itself
While much of the Nebraska corn haa
been Improved In quality by breeding In
the last few years, many farmers are still

Better Granarlea Are Meeded.
Better housing of the grain Is urged by
the grain dealers of Omaha. The loss to
the farmers through exposure to the
weather alone ran Into millions on the 1909
crop,
"The loss to Nebraska corn through the
lack of proper facilities for housing and
protecting the crop after It was matured
probably averaged not less than 7 or 8
cents a bushel for the whole state," de
clared an officer of the Omaha Grain ex
change. Tests of the corn of the state of Iowa
have just been completed at Ames Agri
cultural colege with the result that Prof.
P. d. Hblden has declared that the seed Is
the worst that the state has evr had. The
results of the Iowa test are shown In
tabular form:

The average of Iowa corn Is probably
much below that shown In the table, as
the seed tested was from the best In each
locality. It Is assumed that If these con
ditions exist In. Iowa they are duplicated
in some degree in eastern Nebraska at
least. The seed corn of western Nebraska
because of the dryer climate Is likelyf to
have escaped something of the damage
that was sustained In the damper eastern
section. .

E. J. McVann, secretary of the traffic
bureau of the Commercial club, who ha
returned from Washington where he went
In connection with some rate cases and
who heard the arguments advanced by the
Kansas City boosters for an appropriation
for the Missouri river improvements, has
sent some recommendations and observa
tions to the executive committee of the
Commercial club.
; Mr. McVann recommends activity on the
part of the Commercial club if Omaha Is
to receive aoy advantages from the money
which la to be spent by Uncle Sam In Im
proving the Missouri.' The rivers and har
bors committee of the house has recom
mended an expenditure of .$1,000,000 a. year
for ten years on the Missouri from Kansas
City to 8U Louis. Some time ago the Com
mercial deb waa active in Its efforts to se
cure river Improvements, but of late the

special committee of the club having the
matter in charge has done nothing.
The impression gained by Mr. McVann
Is that Kansas City expects to have a boat
line In operation this summer, and when
boats once get to navigating the stream,
it will be up to the government to keep
the channel clear so the boats may get
through.
Kansas City has raised $660,000 for a boat
line and will raise more money to buy more
boats. Omaha business men are urged to
take stock in the Kansas City project in
the hope that the. boat lines may be ex
tended to Omaha and in this way an inter
est shown by Omaha In havlhg the river
Improved from Kansas City to Omaha, as
well as -on- to St. Louis.
The recommendations of Mr. McVann
will be taken up by the executive com
mittee at its regular meeting Tuesday.

Mayor Dahlman la expected home from
Excelsior Springs this evening or Satur
day morning. As soon as he shows up at
his office preparations will be made for
the heglra of his boosters to the banquet
slated for Lincoln Monday . evening.
Tho present Intention of Boss Flynn and
the other Dahlman leaders Is to organize
a party of twenty-five to fifty good and
faithful henchmen, to proceed to Lincoln
Monday afternoon. . They will take along
some cards and banners showing who they
are for, and will break loose with cheers
for Mayor Jim when he speaks. They ex
pect considerable assistance from demo
crats who. will attend the banquet from
other parts of the state. It la quietly hinted
that Governor Shallenberger will be given
a surprise when the Iahlman men cut
loose. '

Trouble seems to be ahead for the people
responsible for the removal of the body of
Alva Wetzel, the patient who jumped from
a window at the Omaha General hospital,
to Council Bluffs without the formality
of securing a permit from the health de
partment of Omaha. '
The law Is specific and very stringent
on this subject. Nobody can be removed
from this city or stale. , legally, without
such a permit. The application ' to the
health department for a removal permit
mutt declare the cause of death and set
out all the particulars surrounding the case.
This Important formality was Ignored In
the Wetzel case and Health Commissioner
Connell wants to know the reason,, If any
exists. Usually the undertaker or the
hospital. If the death occurs at such an
Institution, Is careful to Inform, the health
office of all circumstances surrounding a
case of this kind. Why no disposition was
shown to comply with the plain provisions
of the law Is what Health Commissioner
Connell wants to know.
That the body has been brought back
does not, in the view of the official charged,
with the keeping of vital statistics, excuse
the perpetrators of the scheme to hurry
the body out of Nebraska without notify
ing either the coroner or tho health office.
Whether prosecution will result In the
case of those responsible In this Instance
is a matter now receiving serious consideration.
