Extreme Prostration of Demand it Feature of Market. VALUES ARE GENERALLY LOWER Extended Mualdatloa Ensae aad Lead lea ! "ell Off From ' I'nir to 81s Point. NEW YORK, Feb. 7. Extreme prostra tion of demand ws the conspicuous fea ture of the stock market today. The heavy liquidation. In consequence, made severe Inroads on prices. The extent of the soil ing last week and the resulting declines, followed by the week-end rnlly, had In clined speculative sentiment to look for a quieter and steadier market. The renewed outpouring of stocks and the determined atMentlon of effective support threw the speculative sentiment back Into the depths of depression. Buying on a scale-down Is to bn relied on always except In periods of downright panic, but order of this clans today were encountered onlv at steady concession In I rice and any attempt to bid up price In face of the flood wa not to b detected. That every sale wa matched by a pur chase goes without saying and that such purchases have repreai nted a passing of strck from stronger to weaker hand for s.n,e time pat Is the conviction of a con siderable body of opinion in the toek mar ket. A to th sources of the liquidation there exists a fairly defined division of opinion, tin one side I the view that the great capitalist groups, wheh accumulated constantly Inst year, missed in opportunity to sell out at the high prices by attempt ing to carry their campals-n over Into the new year, being overcome meantime by the requirement or tne money market and the conviction that the political outlook threatened the welfare of the corporation. Another view Is that distribution of Inst yesr'e accumulations was actually effected while prices were held up by manipulation, following which the fall In prices is seen with complacency by the powerful capital ist groups, If not actually fostered by pro fessed alarm and by recall of credit through the control held over the great banking Institutions. Foreign securities and money markets were undisturbed. The private discount rate declined in Paris and also in London, despite withdrawals of gold from the latter center for shipment to Europe and to South America. The local money market wa easy, but the rapid fall in prloes of stocks Induced some recall of credit where margins were not repaired. The day' extreme decline ran between 4 and 6 point for the stocks In which the bulk of the transactions occurred. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par Value. 12. S01 000.
