CHICAGO, Feb. 1 Grains ruled lower to i day, wheat leading In the decline under heavy selling pressure. Provisions after showing a little strength also tell off. Trading In wheat started with a mod erate decline, which was followed by a alight rally despite th preponderance of bearish factors, notably foreign weakness, lurge arrivals and a slow demand for cash wheat. The temporary strength waa Insufficient to hold the market at the high levels and prices slid down gently from Ho to l4jc, th decline being stayed at different points by buying activity. May retrodraded from 1.10L1014 te 1.0MO l.C94, th other future traveling over a shorter fall. The close was o removed from the low points of the day, with May at $1.0914J1.09. 4jlo lower than tha final figures yesterday. May com prices suffered In comparison with the July figures. Early symptoms of strength .which carried May up to 6610 were unable to successfully resist the downward trend induced by weakness tn ths demand for cash corn. Through most of the sesaton July prices kept above May, the distant month fluctuating from Ho to Ho. while May fell off HWAc from the high point. All the futures made a weak close at the low points, with May at Wii 60HC S,6o lower, while July at 66ic was Ho lower. Trade In oats followed closely that In corn, the variations being from o to Ho. Following Is the list of cities: NEW YORK, Feb. 4. Speculative sent! ment remained much unsettled today a an after-effect of the violent declines ef fected in yesterday's market. There was no resumption of the heavy liquidation which broke the market yesterday and this left the aay open to some recovery. The bear Interest, left uncovered after such a SDasm as has occurred this week. Innu a potential demsnd for stocks sufficient to carry prices away from the low level. The rapid and extensive denllne which has occurred points to a culmination of an ordinary market cycle. Foreigners ex pressed this view of the situation before business resumed on the New York Stock exchange by advancing the prices of Amer leans In that market. It was not surpris ing, therefore, that a rush of bears to cover shorts should have made opening ui ices well above last nleht s closing. 'I ne violence of these movements proved disconcerting to all but the most highly speculative element In the market and ths recovery eliminated some of the substan tia! buying which was begun at th lower pi-Ices. The bears rallied their forces when any sign of that sort appeared and made fresh attacks. These attacks a ere most effective In ths copper group and espe cially American Smelling. The poxltlon of the proposed merger, as well as the re cent statement of annual earnings of the company, were assigned as reasons for Its vulnerability. The tone of speculative sentiment was kept shifting In that way throughout the day. The preliminary estimates of the week's currency movement pointed to an other notable addition to the surplus re serve of the banks. The likelihood of loan contraction to be shown In consequence of the heary stock market liquidation added to this probability. This had Its influence In checking the- liquidation by the prospect that the banks would be ex periencing difficulty before long In finding employment for their eurplu funds. One of the day's upward movements Was in progress at the closing, which was strong, with net gains for most stocks. Bonds were Irregular. Total pales, par value, $3,401,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Niuiib-r oi eairs and lesd.'ng quotations on stocks were as follows: Bales. Hlrh. lxw. Clow, CITIES. Clearlngs.f Inc. Dec. LONDON, Feb. 4 Buying tvt the lower I level rained active American issues on tne stock exchange today more than a dollar over the final prices of New York. A re action followed, but renewed support hard ened the market, and at noon the tone was firm, with prices net 44 to 1V higher. London closing stocks: Totals 2,857 ' 8,419 CATTLE Receipts of cattle ware moderate this morning, only 112 cars being reported in. making the total for the five days 16,000 head, whioh shows a falling off of ever 3.000 head, aa compared with the same days last week. In spite of the fact that receipts were moderate they were apparently large enough considering the condition of the trade. All other markets were reported aa very slow and weak and buyers here were accordingly disposed to take their time and await further infor mation from other selling points before do ing very much business.) Thus It happened that It was 10 o'clock In th morning before buyers even went out Into the yards and considerable later than that before very much business was transacted. When buyers and sellers finally got to gether on a trading basis the market was not so bad after all. Beef steers wer gen erally quoted as weak to 10c lower, but tha quality was very common, there being no very desirable killers In sight and abso lutely nothing that could ibe graded as good to choice. While the movement waa slow, the moat of the cattle changed hands In fair season In the morning. Cows and helfera were also slow to Mb lower, and while backward about selling, were still all disposed of In reasonable season. The cause for the decline waa very plainly the unfavorable advices from east ern selling points. There were not enough feeders to cut very much figure In the trade, but what few there were - sold In about the same notches as yesterday, the market being quoted practically steady.
