V0LTJ3IE OF DEALINGS LARGE Speralatore Profess to ee Dnnners in be Rnatnesa .lltnallon and Proi-eert to Sell Honda Are Weak. NEW YORK, Feb. J.--AgKrest dealings for the day of 1.6T2.0UO shares and Inroads on price of 1 to 8 points for practically all the actlx'e stocks offer evidence of a liquidation In the stock market sufficiently drastic and embracing to call for some othe.' explanation than temporary vagaries of Bps;ulaUve sentiment or merely techni cal conditions In the stock market itvelf The extent to which the previous decline had already run, its duration and the technical results Involved, are eomo of the points which entitle speculators to view the day's events as promising a revOrHuJ. That all Is not well with the body-economic or with finance and Industry as was assumed when prices of stocks were 10 to 40 polntu higher than were touched on the declines today Is borne In upon the mind with conviction. The opinion, that overlays practically all others was that commercial recession and Industrial reaction are to he read In the aotlon of the aex-urltlee market. This opin ion has been gathering adherents for sev eral weeks past. It began with evidence of a lull In the freight movement over the railroads, with some renewed accum ulation of a surplus of freight cars anl gained force with reports of the falling off In orders for iron and decline In Uie price or mat paste commodity. Another factor wa the authority eiven to views publicly stated by qualified legal testiony suppose! to represent the views of large Organisations of capital of the harm to follow from the proposed enforcement of tha Sherman anti-trust law. The word "panic" found frequent repetition In these various pictures or the future, and the ef feet was decidedly disturbing to the nerves of the stock market element. There ws. the fear that with the arn-ct of the upwind course of prices of commodities there would neofisarlly follow a process of deflation, which would arrest the course of prosper ous activities all through the channels of commerce. This woek's failure of an Important firm of dealers In bonds was the text, also, for unfavorable views. There grew up a sup position that the cleaning up of credits now In progress might originate as far back as the panic of 1907. The market had an effective rnlly of 1 to a points in the final hour and the closing tone was strong and well sustained at tho recovery, but the Inviting profits on the day's decline offered to the bears, obviously supplied much of the Inducement for buy ing. Bonds were weak, but with no sign of the demoralized tone of stocks. Total sales, par value. $3.92:i.OO0. United States 2's declined H per cent and the 4's. per cent on call. About twenty-two loarln wol expected, but only tell arrived In time to he sold during early rounds. A goou. brisk demand for any thing at all suitable' for killing purposes resulted In a quick clearance at the Im proved prices and the advance was equally apparent on both sheep and lamba. One string of fed western lamba was gixat eiioiiah to realise 8 bo. Kwes sold at ib it and heavy yearlings changed hands at 17.16. in account of the rather limited offer ings of stock suitable for finishing, there has been very title activity In thia branch of the trade lately. Many orders are still on file In the offices o commission firms, however, and what few strings have been taken back Into the country recently have commanded very satisfactory figures. A good sixed band of western lambs sold for 17.70 to a feeder yesterday, which Is tha highest price paid for stork of this kind in many weeks at this point. The wisdom of cutting down the supply of live mutton this week In order to aiiow market to recover from Its recent panicky condition has bean ampiy proven during the last three days. Total receipts for the four daya number 17,000 head, as compared with over 24.000 tor tho same days last week and over 26.000 head for the corresponding period last year. Buyers, as a rule, did not go out into the yards until after 10 o'clock, and It was well along toward midday before the day's business was really underway. This means that the market, as a whole, was slow and dull. Buyers did not appear to be as anxious for cattle as yesterday, and the strength and activity which made yes terday's market notablo was absent today. Beef . steers were slow, sellers all the morning. Nvtth prices anywhere, from. -weak to at lottst 10c lower. In soma cases sales men thought that they were bid even worse than 10c lower. "' Cows iand heifers sold about ' the same way as beef steers, the trade being dull and prices w ak to as much as 10c lower. At midday there were still come cattle unsold, but this was due In part to tho fact that trains were so Jate In arriving at the yards. There were only a very few stockers and feeders in sight, in fact hardly enough to make a market. What few cattle there were generally sold In about the same notches as yesterday.
