NEW TORK. Jan. 18.-The fever whtoh
has kept the stork market disturbed this
week waa reduced today. Dealings con
tracted and the fluctuation narrowed.
These are the usual symptoms of tho re
rftt&tillHhment of normal conditions after
a period of unsettlement and were welcome
for that reason. The price movement waa
upwards, but the r score ry brougt decreai
ot demand, followed by some ruction.
Tha arrest of yesterday s decline dis
closed the approximate average of prices
at which demand deveiopa aufflclent to
absorb the offerings. Tha disappearance of
this demand on amall recoveries reveals
Its substantial character as distinguished
from the ordinary speculative turn and
gives rnoouragement to hop of improve
ment In the Investment situation. There
waa some renewed consideration today of
the probable effeot on the demand for cap
ital of the financial losses Involved In the
French flood disasters. The destruction of
capital la atmliar In kind, though not In
degree, to that dons by the San Francisco
calamity, and International bankers admit
that the likelihood of some effect on tiie
exchangee in the proceaa of repair of the
damage. The large credit balance of the
French nation with the world at large
glvea It the ability to call home creaks
at need. Its own home resources ara so
abundant at the same time that the pro-
ci is expecrea to be gradual and without
disturb na- effect.
Th hopeful views expressed In publlo
"""ranees of James J. Hill and William
nutuciBiifr were an mriuencc toward the
more cheerful feeling on the stock ex
change. Account began to be taken of
the Improbability that the siiprema court
would have Its decision In ths American
Tobacco case ready for handing down on
Monday, from which time a three weeks'
adjournment of court Is Intended.

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning
wtre very small, only rorty cars being re
ported In, which was not enough to make
very much of a market. Still the demand
was very good for killers of All kinds.
Buyers were out in the yards early In the
morning and everything at all desirable
chenged hands very readily at prices that
were quit a little better than yesterday.
In fact, the otttls today sold fully as
good as a week ago, the decline earlier In
the week having been practically all re
covered. There were no feeders of any consequence
In sight this morning and no material
change In values In that kind of cattle.
For the week, however, they are quits a
little stronger, being In many oases 10ifl6c
higher than lajt week's close.

HOQS Briefly stated, the big bulk of
early hogs sold al prices fully steady with
yesterday's best time. or. In other words.
moat sales looked to be a shads higher
than yesterday's general market. Buyers
were out In the alleys early, the demand
appeared to be fairly liberal and move
ment active. In the neighborhood of fifty
loada sold on the basla above noted.
Light hoes, and more eimeclallv the
mixed droves of underweights, met with
more or less discrimination, and In many
cases did not sell quite so well as on yes
terday. HUH, the percentage of light stuff
aa hardly great enough to affect the
market as a whole. Toward the cloae,
after packers had filled their more urgent
orders, the demand eased off somewhat
and practically all of th early strength
wss lost.
A cunatderable ponton --of receipts
changed hands between 37.86 and 88.10, the
blK string selling at 18.00'o8.06. Tops reached
li.zO as computed with yesterday's top of

There is a Wonderful
Difference
btrfwecn the light afforded by n ordinary carbon
incandescent and the brilliancy of our new Tung
etcn lamp. The latter hat a metal filament (the
liny wire intide the bulb) whi. h radiates two and
one-half jdnves at much light with the same amount
of electric current.
A 40-Watt Tunggtia Affords Twicti the Light
of the 50-watt carbon lamp now in general use
and costs one-fifth less to bum. We recommend
its use to our customers as it more than cuts their
light bills in two, making electric light so inexpen- '
live that no home, however humble, and no store,
however small, can afford to be without it.
