Speculative senti ment blew hot and hlew rold in the stock market today and the sudden transposi tions offered some violent contracts. De mand for slocks at one time early In the day was so Impre.islve and seemed to be coming from suoh Influential sources that the lone of the speculation became very hopeiul. one or two items in uie news were construed In the same spirit. That storkn should stream into the market in urgent liquidation and In overw Helming volume In the presence of this hopeful feeling argued a weight or offerings over hanging the market that dampened the cheerfulness and set conjecture to work again to fathom the motives and Uie sources of the selling. The retrospect of the market would have to go back many months to find prices at which stocks could have been acquired to offer any profit on the sales made at today's prices. This fact accentuated the conviction of thoroughness ot the liqui dating movement In progress and pointed to unloading on the part of the buyers of larger calibre, who had come Into the market at a very early stage of last year's advance. The belief was thus created In a closing up of a market campaign of long duration and widespread extent. There Was nothing in the Immediate sit uation td explain the pressure on the mar ket. The money position worked eaxier and the weekly bank statement of Sat urday gave warrant for confidences In the security of the money market from any further stringency. There was an en gagement of gold for South America, but the foreign exchange market was eas er, in spite of the decline In money rates. This movement might reflect a renewal of foreign buying of cotton Invited bv the severe decline which has occurred In that vommoouy. A survey of the foreign trade statement for December, however, -goes farther to explain the miscalculation of the year end money markets, which has helped to em barrass the speculative position. The $13H, 742.000 value of Imports stood near to the previous month's record figures. While the iii.uuu.mu decline In value of exports lert the excess value of exDorts at onlv l:2.- 979.905 for the month, compared with the ii,ou,ww in the December or tne preced ing year. The scarcity of foreign ex change, which kept up rates all through December In that denartment or the in tcrnalloimi money market Is thus without mystery. Our own bank statement. In the heavy loan contraction' of the trust companies and the substantial Increase in clearing house bank loans, shows another phae or tne adjustment or the shifting or loans resorted to iri November to obviate a de ficit in the reserves. The enormous reflux of funds from Interior money markets sup. plies the resources for this adjustment, but supplies rather faint encouragement for assumptions of great trade activity. The acute weakness of the transconti nental railroad stocks today indicate mis givings on the score of decreased trafflo as well as possible as a redistribution of trarric growing out of opening of new Pacific coast extensions. This was a fac tor In the weakness of the Hill stocks and St. Paul. The further postponement of the suit 'to dissolve the Union Pacific merger was made the occasion of some orderly strength in that stock but it was amongst the weakest In the later selling. several of the day's suoreme court de cisions, which upheld the contentions of corporations, were made Something of in me eriort to raiiy prices, . The satisfac tion of the demand to cover shorts on the part of the bears about exhausted the buying at the recovered price level and the subsequent collapse, placed prices lower than the low prices of Saturday morning.
