Paulhan, the French aviator broke all of
ficial and unofficial records for altitude in
a Farnam biplane Wednesday. The time In
the air was 50 minutes 40V seconds. . The
time of descent was 7 minutes and 30
seconds.
Cortlandt Field Bishop announced tonight
that the Judges ot the aviation events had
calculated the height of Paulhan's night
today at 4.146 feet. These figures now stand
officially as the record. Paulhan's aneroid
barometer showed his highest altitude as
4,600 feet and the Judges at first figured
close to 6.000 feVt, but tonight, after exten
sive figuring from trlangulatlons and calcu
lations taken by the trlgonotncter, this was
reduced to 4,146 feet.
Paulhan is the Idol of the crowd tonight.
He made his great record shortly after
losing the speed record of the course to
Glenn 11. Curtiss.
The Frenchman, using an engine that had
Just arrived from Paris, had been almos
constantly In the limelight all the after
noon. He had Circled the course again and
again, skidded and dipped and swung
corners in daring fashion that made his
wife shiver.
Condition Are Ideal.
The sun was low toward the sea and the
shadows had begun to gather when he
X made his decision to go higher In the air
than any man in a heavier than air
machine ever had attempted.
The wind barely stirred. Cortland E.
Bishop, president of the Aero Club of
America, stood in front of the Judge's stand
enthusiastio over the beautiful scene that
stretched out before him.
"I never saw such perfect weather for
aviation," he remarked. "We ought to
have the altitude record broken today."
A minute later Paulhan rose in the air.
He bent low his gray-capped head and
smiled a smile ot promise as he mude a
short circle over te mass of .craning spec
tators. Curtiss had. felt the higher cur
rents and came down. Hamilton had
landed tamely. Paulhan pointed north,
went up 1,000 feet, paused over the center
of the field again as though to take an
other last look at . human faces, then
turned north and up again. ;
. By this time there was Just one thing
In all the universe for the crowd the
Frenchman and his air-conquering ma
chine, rapidly becoming a speck In tho
gathering twilight.
Crowd Housed to Frensy.
At the estimated height of l.soo feet Paul
han described a great circle, as It feeling
the currents. By this time he was a mile
and a halt from camp. When word had
spread that hq had beaten the world's
record the vast throng was roused to
frenzy.
Two thousand feet and still climbing.
Sense of distance almost lost from the
earth. No one would have been surprised
If the man and his little wings had b 'en
swallowed up In the Void. .
At 6 o'clock the machine became plainer.
Paulhan began to descend. He came down
easily in front ot the grand stand after
being In the air nearly fifty-one minutes.
As he leaped from his machine, cheeks
glowing and eyes flashing, he was grabbed
by his friends and carried to the grand
stand, where he bared his head amid a
thundei of cheers.
Meets Wife In Balloon.
Paulhan gave the crowd another treat
earlier In the afternoon. The balloon, New
York,. .which had ascended from Hunting
ton park, came drifting toward Aviation
camp. In it was Mme. Paulhan, among
other guests, and when the Frenchman
caught sight of It he sprang to . his Far-
man machine, snapped out Instructions to
his helpers and In a flash dashed off. At
that moment Beachy and Knabenshne, In
their dirigibles, had paswd over the grand
stand and started toward the New York.
But Paulhan, rising In a wide circle to a
height of 600 feet, sailed a mile or more
over the adacent fields and the fringe of
trees that lined the camp on the north
until he had approached close enough to
hall his wife In the balloon, and then sweep
ing down, paid his respects to Beachcy
and to Knabenschue.
Third Day is Perfect.
The third day was perfect. ThevflaKS In
the grandstand hung limp. The field
basked in the warm sun. The crowds
poured in all day until the estimate reached
tha figure of 50,000 and down the fence line,
guarded by 300 deputy sheriffs, the crowd
surged for a mile to the gates.
Stretched out before the eyes of these
fascinated people was a plateau dotted with
th. newest designs in air craft. Paulhan,
hidden from the other aviators, was tinker
ing with a new engine. There was-much
French chatter about. In the sky balloons
were hanging. Across the valley arose a
range ot dim .' mountains and mingling,
clouds and snow, the big white tents ot the
foreign aviators and the headquarters of
Glenn II. Curtiss, hope of America for the
laurels of this neet, were In the fore-
giound. I
The morning passed with no movement
frcm the tents. Toward noon Mlscarul In a
Brellot monoplane flew down the far end
A band played waits mturTei and the official I
starters and markers took their placea. 1
Then the silent Curtiss tpned front hl
tent and the megaphone announced that he
would try for the speed rrord Of the course.
Clad Immaculately, wltM a golfing t-np
pulled low over Ms eyes, he took a sent
and gave th signal. After a short til 11! '
right he Increased his speed to the rate of
4.1V, miles an hour. The time given for the
course of slightly more than a mile and
half was 2:1SH- No sooner had Curtiss
alighted and strolled carelessly away Into
the crowd than Paulhan's manager an
nounced that the Frenchman would seek to
take the speed honor from the American.
Frenchman Tries to Beat It.
The sporting Instinct of the spoctntois
was aroused. Here was a elesneut contest.
The course was cleared with difficulty and
Paulhan started again. Then It was seen
that his engine had less powtjr. His turns
were not so snarp. rue second lap, which
he designated as the one he wished tlm- d.
was fourteen seconds longer than Curtis'
record. The Frenchman kept on flylrg,
however, until he had circled tho course
six times. The sight of his cinft bussing
through the air had become so common
that hundreds turnod to the Kgvptlan
dancers In the side shows along concession
lane.
On none of his rounds did he equal
Curtiss' record, though be covered mote
than eight miles in tha flight.
Pleased by his victory, Curtiss came out
on the course again.. He went up to'.rVl
out the air currents to try for n high
flight. At the height of 100 feet hp circled
Charles K. Hamilton, in a Ctirtlss ma- '
chine, left the ground soon . after In a
qualifying flight, but came down after an
erratic flight of. a few minutes. .'',.'.

there are twenty-six entrlts oh the field.
