NEW YORK, Jan. . Hints that there
would bs sensational developments in the
cases of the Indicted United Copper com
pany officials were thrown out today when
counsel for V. Augustus Helnza enteted
demurrer to the Indictments against
Heinze and gained the adjournment ot a
hearing on a charge involving other United
Copper officials nt.6 directors.
Hslnse and his brother, Arthur P., were
both In the United States circuit court
when the cases came up. P. Augustus
Helnse pleaded not guilty to an indictment
charging blm with over-oertlficatlon and
misapplication of the funds of tne Mer
cantile National bank, the former Morse-
Heinze Institution and argument on the
demurrer was set tor January 13. A motion
to quash also will be entered.
It was stated that the. motion will be ao-
companled by allegations of unusual in
terest concerning acts and statements In
the grand Jury room when the Indictments
were found.
It Is the charge of the prosecution that
Mercantile bank funds were used In
financing a pool In United Copper 'stocks
and when the books of the United Copper
oompany were wanted by the grand Jury
in its investigation they tvere found to
have been spirited away.
In the Mercantile bank case, Helnia's
original ball of 150,000 was continued.

BAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 6. Mayor F. R.
Taylor received today the report of a coin
mittee appointed by him In October, 1903,
to "investigate the causes of municipal
corruption In San Francisco as dUclosed
by the investigation of the grand Jury and
the prosecution of certain persons for brib
ery and other offenses against the state."
The report makes a number of recom
mendations, among them the following:
That municipal elections be made non
partisan, the names ot candidates to ap
pear on the ticket without party designa
tion; the annulment of public service fran
chises that have been obtained by fraud;
th enactment of a statute compelling pub
Ho service corporations to testify against
themselves, and that it be a felony to sell
the columns of a newspaper unless they are
plainly marked as columns sold.

C. Piatt probably will never be In condition
to testify, Mae C. Wood, who claims that
he married her, must stand trial for forgery
and perjury charges, based on document
she produced and testimony she gave to
support her alleged marriage. Although
counsel' argued In her behalf today that
the Indictments should be quashed because
of Piatt's failure to appear. Judge Foster
refused to dismiss -them. A date for trial
will be set after further argument.
