Now that the city tournament l ovr
you hear many of the contestants bowling
It all over again. The main point of dis
cussion has been as to comparative merit
of he curve and straight ball. The curve
ball Is delivered with but a limited amount
of speed, while the straight ball la usually
a speedy ball.
As a matter of comparison, take the first
ten winners In the doubles and singles and
the delivery they use:
DOUBLES.
First Neale and Sprague, curve and
straight
S'-cond Zimmerman and Francisco, both
curve.
Third Blakeney and Huntington, curve
and straight.
Fourth Drinkwater and Anderson, curve
and straight.
Fifth Carman and Schults, both straight.
Sixth Neely and Plckard. both curve.
Seventh Conrad and Camp, curve and
straight.
Eighth Mann and Bullard, both curve.
Ninth Lehman and Stapenhorst, curve
and straight.
Tenth Keyt and Seaman, both curve.
The Meta team, winner of the five-man
event, Is composed of five curve and only
one straight ball shooter, ' therefore until
proven otherwise It la to be considered
that the curve .ball bowlera have it on
the straight men.
The Klaurk Olendale. who are picked
by the Commercial leaguer to win first
place in the five-men event at the tourna
ment, didn't get started until the single
event. In which they bowled the following
scores: Klauck, 459; Godensch wager, (77;
Stapenhorst, 666; Lehman, 66$, and Camp,
620, or a total of 1,794, or forty-five mom
pins than won the championship for the
Met. team.
A sixth league haa been organized, and
will be known as the Jobber. It will be
composed of ten teams of three men each,
with the following membership: Carpen
ter Paper company office man. Carpenter
Paper company shipping room. Army
Headquarters, Omaha Gas company, Pax
ton & Gallagher, Midland Paint and Glass
company Capitols, Equitable Life, Gate
City, and a picked team.
The games will be bowled on alleys 9
and 10 at Francisco's, the first five night
of each week.
If the New Intended to Issue a challenge
by "Bill" Voss to the McCord-Brady Ad
vos, Mr. BUI may figure that he la on.
G. O. says he will bowl him three games
on the Metropolitan, three at Tucker's and
three on the Association alley.
Mose Youaem 1 badly scared at the way
the Cudahys are going. They have won
twelve straight and are right on Mose's
heels.
There Is now just $2.10 in the fund in the
cellar league toward that suit for Carman.
The boy are hitting the head pin too
regular for the cellarette king since It
coat them 10 cent per miss.
It would have don old Hip Van Wlnkl
good to have been present when Carson
and Hunter bowled their tournament
games. By the time Hunter finished hi
last he had to be rubbed down and car
ried from th alleys on a stretcher, but
old Kit was still there and going some.
Wonderful how Kit can keep It up.
City Champion Keyt I going to get a
300 game before the birds come In the
spring. That one pin that stood In his
large single game haa been hurting htm.
Oh, you Glendale. From the bottom to
the top In such a short while, Is going
some.
Weber Is trying to organise a picked
team to shoot at St. Louis in the Mid-West.
If any bowler wishes to Join, get In con

Professionals
to Be Eliminated
Nebraska Athletio Board Taking
Steps to Put Minor Sports in
Charge of Graduates.
LINCOLN, Jan. 6. (Special.) Following
out the. suggestion ot th National Inter
collegiate association, mad at the recent
meeting In New Tork City, the Nebraska
Athletio board will try to eliminate, as far
as possible, professionals from It coaching
system, and will substitute the graduate
plan In base ball and the minor sports.
Already graduate coaching has been tried
in basket ball, the present coach of the
Cornhusker five being a Nebraska graduate
and ex-star player. The next sport to feel
the effeot of the new system will be base
ball. The Board of Control decided last
fall to try a graduate coach for the dia
mond sport and accordingly elected Johnny
Bender as coach, but the former Corn
husker has recently decided that he does
not want the job and another man will
have to be aelected to take up th work. .
It Is very likely that the position will be
hoffered to Oren A. Beltser. who was cap
tain of the base ball team last spring and
of th foot ball eleven last tall. The base
ball commltte of th Athletic board Is In
favor of Beltzer and will recommend him to
the board at Ita next meeting.
Beltser played base ball with th Corn
husker for three years, and was one of
the best ball artist that ever represented
this school. He understands the fine points
of the game, and the base ball commute
think he will mak a successful coach.
It ha been announced by Manager Eager
thst base ball practice will be started In
the cage In th gymnasium early In March
so that a coach will have to be hired soon
In order to give him plenty of time to get
a line on his material.
Captain Hoy Oreenallt of this year's nine
is not registered In school this semester.
but will return to the university at the
opening of the second semester In order to
become eligible for the spring sport.
Johnny Bender I said to be slated for
the position of athletic director at th
Kearney Military academy. He has been
offered that Job at a salary of 12,600, and
tt Is understood that he Intends to accept
the place, since he has been refused th
foot ball coaching position at Nebraska uni
versity.
Another Nebraska foot ball player, Harry
Ewlng. 1 being mentioned (or the position
of head toot ball coach at the University
of Tennessee. H has applied for the place,
and the southern school Is said to be favor
able to hi election.
Ewlng played three years of foot ball
with Nebraska 1907. 190B and UOt. His posi
tion wa guard, whei h did soma wonder
ful work for th Cornhuskers. He was
known as th "Iron Man" ot the team,
having been given that name because of
his great strength and his power to play
strenuous foot ball In every gam. H
never took out time during his entire foot
ball career. Coach "King" Cole declared
Ewing to be th moat powerful lineman he
had ever seen.
Dr. Clapp, physical director of th state
university, who went east last week to
represent Nebraska at the Intercollegiate
conference, will return to Lincoln tomorrow.

Farmer Burns
to Meet Gotch
Old Kan Will Wrestle Hia Boy at
' the Auditorium Friday
Night.
Th old man and hla bor will shine In
that wrestling-boxing firmament at the
Auditorium Friday night Farmer Burns
will wrestle Frank Ootch.
Manager Olllan has received a telegram
stating that Dr. Roller, , who ha suffered
an attack of ptonialn poisoning, will not
be able to keep his engagement te meet
Ootch In Omaha that night and Burns has
agreed to take th doctor's place.
The Farnwr U the man who put the
finishing touches on Ootch that enabled
him to become the world's champion wrest
ler; h know everything tht Ootch knows
and does, and. If possible. Burns knows' a
great deal more than Ootch knows about
the game of pinning a man's shoulders to
tin p.JJrJ mat.
Of the old man Ootch, himself, once said
to the writer, "You ,may talk as you
pleane of the gret wrestlers of the world
Muldoon, Lewis, Carkeek, McLeod, Jen
kins. Hackenschmtdt and myelf but for
the most finished artist ot them all you've
got to come back to old Farmer Burns."
The Farmer hss been "working" all win
ter and Is going as fast as ever, despite
his 60 year or 41, for he never gets be
yond that age; he has been 48 for several
years.
The audience Friday night is sure of
most Interesting match between Ootch and
Burns. The old fellow, always a prim
favorite In Omaha, -where ha lives, will
be greeted with as much enthusiasm, no
doubt, as Gotch or Jeffries, and will repay
hi admirers, too, for their reception.
