NEW YORK tlon was renewed fh the stock market to day with much the same appearance of urgency as on the opening day of the new year. There wns no 14 per cent money rate today on to account for the wakness of the stock market and other ii'mlnal ex planations were advanced. Many of th se horp an appearance of mere surmise, the busiest of which centered about Hock Is land. The personal phase of the d scuss on was a supplement to the gossip Im u lit out by the eccentric bulge of 31 points In the stock followed by a total re ape; all within the space of fifteen minutes on the day after the Christmas holldiy Inter val. Humors were plentiful regarding the scope and power oi me Influences h.'iug exerted to make effective the desind disappi oval of the Hock Island market management. The principal selling of the day was at tributed to the retirement of speculative commitments which had been prompted by this disciplinary movement. More substantial grounds for the weak ness of stocks were found In other factors. For one thing, the unexpected stringency of the money market after the first of the year and the absence of Investment demand for stocks growing out of ti.s annual a disa ercounlored In holt'lng over through ihe autun was the fail In the banking Burp us to near tne vanishing point In November. he wholesale shifting of loans then re sorted to In order to avert a deflct 1 in volved the assumption of obligations whlon are believed to be coming due now. The money market facilities for meeting these obligations are less than expected and liquidation In face of a languid soeeulailve derrand Is necessary. The relief afforded to the loan account of the banks in November was secured partly. It Is believed, bv large advances from surplus treasury funds of the great coiporatlons. These had to be recalled In cornectlon with the enormous annual sd tlemcnts. The course of events at Wash ington divided attention wtlh happnnngs within the financial district' and were givn their share of responsibility for the action of the market.
