Sunday. Holiday.
CATTLE As' usual on the last day of
the week there were not enough cattle on
sale to make a market or Interest buyers.
For the week reclepts have been quite
liberal as compared with last week and
not much different from the same week
last year. , ,.
Considering that this lias been a holiday
week the market us a whole has been In
fair condition. Under the influence Of the
very good buying demand prevailing beef
cattle firmed up during the. first part of
the week, but later on under the Influence
.,f the. iinvec break in values at Chicago
"consequent upon burdensome receipts the
market eased otr again, ai me cume ui
the week th market is not much different
from wliat it was one week ago as regards
values. , ,
The market on cows and heifers has
been in a good healthy condition all the
week. The better grades have sold freely
and at the close are possibly a little
stronger. On the other hand inferior
kinds have been rather slow and are a
little eatier than one-week ago.
The mobt unsatisfactory feature of the
trade has been the very poor demand for
stockers and feeders. While a few strictly
fleshv feeders, such as packers will bid
on, are still held at firm prices and about
as high as last week, the market on the
common and thin kinds has been extremely
slow and dull, with receivers finding it
hard work to unload their holdings. At
the close of the week that kind of cattle
may safely be limited at 15Cu25c lower.
Even at the decline it Is hard work to
move that class of cattle, as no one ieems
to want them. (Quotations on cattle:

IUMIS The new year started out with
such light receipts that there were hardly
enough hogs on role to make u real test
of the market. When the trade opened
only twenty-one cars were reported In and
only nlno or ten back. In addition to the
fresh receipts there were flye cars that
came in late yesterday after packers bad
filled their orders that had to be carried
over or sold lower. With so few hogs In
sight and with early advices from Chicago
Indicating a lower rane n' prices at that
point there was nothing here to put life ot
snap Into the trade, etill packers seemed to
want the hogs and considering everything
the market was not bad. In faet prices
paid were steady to stronger than yester
day and the most of the early hoss sold
in good season. A considerable proportion
of the better hogs sold at t. 208.2" and on
up as high as t.35 for the best. The
lighter hogs -Bold from td.20 down. Common
louds running from rough heavy down to
pigs, were slow, no one being very anxious
for that kind any day.

SHEEP The market was practically
bare of suoplh's today, as Is usually the
case on a Saturday, and values remained
nominally firm.
Although the total rec.lpts for the week
are a few thousand head heavier than
either last week or the same week of the
previous year, packers were anxious for
good killing material from the opening and
prices ruled slisiuly higher on both sheep
and lambs during Monday's session. A
good strong lone to the demand during the
balance if the we-k made it easy for
salesmen to maintain Monday's quotations
and while prices have naturally shown
some weakness or strength at times, the
week Is closing with most values Just

Spokane has a population of 120,000 and growing at the rate of 25,000 yearly.
Some orchards in the Spokane country netted the owners over $1,500 per acre
in 1!)0!J. Our soil is a deep, black loam, clay subsoil. No gravel, no rock, no irriga
tion. We are the largest orchard operators in the Spokane country having sold nearly
L',000 acres in the past two years. N
Let us select a 5 or 10-acre tract in our new 1,000-acre addition and act vou
fed lambs sold at t'-50 yesterday, but the
big run of toppy stuff is hardly quotable
over t.25. The demand for good owes con
tinues active and prices all the way from
COs to tl.00 higher than last Janusry. Some
good natives realized t5.60 Thursday,
whereas top natives were quoted up to
4 K' a year ago today.
There have been very few desirable
wethers in the week's run and gooil light
yearlings have also been scarce. Most of
the yearlings received here lately hare
averaged right around 100 pounds, but
strictly prime lightweights would no
doubt sell as high as t7.25.
The feeder situation this week has pre
m ii ted no especially new featu.-es. Suit
able warmed-up and short-fed grades arcs
till eagerly sought by finishers, but the
rtctual volume of trade is not very broad.
Prices are fullv firm with a week ago.

DUN'S REVIEW OF TRADE
Moderate Recession, Due to Closing
of Year, is Noted.
STORM RETARDS DISTRIBUTION
General Indastrlal and Mercantile
Conditions Are In Excellent Shape
Bin; Demand for Iron and
Steel in I'rospect. i.
NEW YORK. Jan. l.-R. G. Dun & Co.'s
weekly review of trade today says:
Except for holiday trade, which has been
active and Indicative of the substantial
prosperity of th country, there has been
the moderate trade recession usual In the
closing week of the year. The big- storm
has served also to retard distribution,
while the railroad strjke continues a cause
of soma dlntiirbtuice' The effect of high
price cotton Is felt to some extent In the
dry goods trade, making for greater cau
tion on the part of both producers and
buyers. But after making due allowances
for these drawbacks, the fact remains that
the year closes with general industrial and
mercantile conditions In excellent shape, and
while there are problems of hlKh pricis
Involving contentions between capital and
labor, and problems of politics Involving
the relations of the corporations to the
publio, these are no more serious or acute
than thorn which confront the business
community at all times.
Although the year closed with a season
able contraction in the demand for Iron
and steel prospects are bright for an active
business early in 1910 and most producers
now have sufficient orders on their books
to Insure full operations for some time to
come; many mills in the Pittsburg district
will not observe the New Year's holiday
because of the heavy tonnage calling for
prompt delivery.
Sales of print cloth yarn fabrics at Tall
River last week amount to about lao.iHW
pieces, and trading was restricted, owing
to tha unwillingness of mills to Increase
tbelr contracts while cotton is advancing.
Cotton goods houses generally look for
an active trade by tha middle of January.
Export trade with the far east la quiet. In
tha woolen goods division purchasers of
worsted warp broadcloths have not been
up to the record of a year ago, and it Is
thought that ordering may be slow when
the semi-fancy and fancy lines are opened.
Jobbing trade on dress goods has been
light. In men's wear, salesman on the
road are sending in some good orders for
wool suitings but the local market con
tinues qulot. There has been a better In
quiry for cotton yarns, but woolen and
worsted yarns are quiet.
With both buyers and sellers of foot
wear still engaged on Inventories t he vol
ume of new business continues small. Man
ufacturers, however, still have a fair
amount of reserve orders and It Is expected
that business will resume normal propor
tions shortly. Prices remain firm, owing
to the high oot of material.
