SCHURMAN WOULD DROP MODERN LANGUAGES President of Cornell Asks Why They Should Have Place In Coarse ef Stndy. ITHICA, N. T.. Dec. 30 "What is the use of retaining the study of German and French and otl-er modern foreign lan guages? What are the grounds for main talnlng them? If you exclude college and university teachers, probably not 011 In 5u who have learned the languages will ever use them, or could If they were called upon to do so." President Jacob Gould Schurman of Cor nell university suggested this radical change In college curriculum In speaking before the convention of the Modern Lan guage Association of America htre t -day CHICAGO, Dec. 50 -Thomas L Chlving lon of Louisville was elected ptesident of the American Base Bail association, over Joseph D. O'Brien, at the iinnual meetirf here yrsieiday. Chiving!, ti won on Ihe first bai ot by fiv e votes to tt ree. O'Brien, the present Incumbent, did not make as good a batile 11 was expected, as It was thought he was at least powerful enouah t,i cau.e a deadlock on the flist ballot. A rule was passed requiring all clubs to provide dressing rooms at the park for the players, rrrs.dent Cfilvlnrton an nounced the league headquarters would be moved to Chicago about February L George Ti-beau was re-elected chtclrman of the bosrd of directors, but there m:if be a contest on hla right to eervew The directors are elrcted by cluh-. gwl Loulsj vil'e, not Kansas City. Is entit'.cd to a director. At one time Tebcsu -was the owner of both the I.oil' Hie, and Kans.is City clubs, but last year he sold tha Louisville club to William Grayson. He has continued to hold his seat on tho hoard of directors, although he had no Interest tn the Louiavl le club. ' The point has been raised that Tebeau has co right to represent Louisville on the board and the question of his eligibility will probably be considered ht the February meeting. Itrsnlt Is a ftnrprlse. The election of Chivingtoh was something of a surprise, although Chlvington himself was confident. The three northern clubs, Minneapolis, St. Paul and Mi waukee, stood rolidly behind O Hrlen. but that waa all the suprort he could muster. Both Toledo and Columbus were consid ered as favoring a oommxwnls candidate until shortly afitr noon, when W. R. Armour of Toledo announced he would vote for one of the two candidates then In the cont st. This was Interpreted as meaning he would vote for Chlvington and the O'Brien supporters admitted that If he voted for Chivtngton that would clinch his election. When the ballot was taken Armour voted for Chlvington and Columbus followed. This gave Chlvington the support vf Kan- sis City, Louisville, Indianapolis, Toledo and Columbus. The continuance of the 16K-game schedule met with little opposition and the financial success of last season caused the magnates to adopt it again. The season will be-m or. April 13 and probably end on Septem ber IS. The schedule committee is com posed of W. H. Watkins. Indianapolis; George Tebeau, Kansas City, and M. E C'antiilon, Minneapolis.
