Wheat was unsettled and prices moved

cables gave the market a strong start, but
prices soon reacted owing to selling in
spired by liberal receipts in the northwest.

later, owing to reports from Kansas city,

early trading, but a firm tone developed
later owing to the strength of wheat. The
market closed at the tup, with prices un
changed to Vhc higher. i
Oats were inclined to be weak during the
first half of the session, In sympathy with
other grain, but rallied In the linal hour
and closed, with prices o lower to HoUc
nigner.
Provisions closed unchanged to 10c higher.

Packers all seemed to want beef steers
and there waa a fair movement of the

prices. Under reasonably free bulng ttiu
offering changed hand In good season,
at least the early arrivals did.
Cows and hellers were also In good de
mand and they, too, commanded steady
to strong prices.- The early trade waa In
a good, healthy condition, and, aa a rule,
satisfactory to the selling Interests.
The stocker and feeder trade was ex
tremely dull and prices very weak. The
fact Is the trade on that kind of cattle is
the next; thing to dead. Cattle that are
too thin to work off on the killers ars
hard to move and the country can hardly
rea.ixe bow poony they are selling. , The
cause. Is to be found In trie fact that oorn
fields7 are In many cases not ready for cat
tie to be turned in, many farmers not hav
ing finished picking corn before the heavy
snow dine on. All winter pasture is buried
and that means that cattle have to be fed
on stacked hay of fodder. With the supply
of such feed running low the ooantry is
not likely to buy many stock cattle at the
present time.

good can come of' the proposed conference
on hank guaranty between the governors
of Nebraska. "Kansas and Oklahoma.
Mr. Webster was the principal attorney
In the cases wherein the federal courts
enjoined the enforcement of the Nebraska
and Kansas guaranty laws.
. Speaking of the conference asked by
1 Governor Haskell, Mr. Webster says:
"I do not see how any good can come
out of a conference by the governors of
Oklahoma. Nebraska and Kansas over the
bank guaranty law as proposed by Gov
ernor Haskell. The federal courts have
enjoined the enforcement of the laws In
Nebraska and Kansas and I have no doubt
that the federal courts would enjoin tha
enforcement of the law In Oklahoma If a
proper suit were Instituted In a proper
tribunal.
"There Is something fundamentally
wrong and vicious (n principle In legisla
tion which proposes. elUier directly or In
directly, to lake the property of one man
and give It to another as a gratuity, or
to compel one man or company to help pay
the debts of another whn he Is under no
obligation, contractual or otherwlae, to
do so.

Beginning January L no more Frisco
business will be transacted directly In the
offices of the Rock Island line at Four
teenth .and Farnam streets. An order haa
been received from rtie ' Chicago offices
stating that the divorce of the two Inter
ests will take active effect on New Tear s
day.
During the past five or six years the
(lock Island llnea and the Trlsco system
have had Joint offices In Omaha. Prior to
hat time the Frisco Interests had an of
fice of their own and It is now consid
ered likely that separate beadjuarteri
will be maintained in Omaha in the fu
ture. "For the present, at least, a traveling
freight agent will probably be In charge
of the Frisco business in Omaha." said an
official of the Hock Is. and lines. "It is the
general impression, however, that the old
system of two offices will be adopted, al
though we have no advice to that effect.
We have been ordered to discontinue the
Frisco business here and the signs of that
railroad will be erased from our windows."
