RELIGIOUS NOTES.
An old church In New York has been
sold to a dry goods firm, and the latest
fashions will now be exhibited there six
days in the week.
A return to the simple services or years
ago was advocated by Bishop J. II. Vincent
In an address before the Chicago Metho-
dlst preachers' meeting. The hUhop spoko
on A sane sabbatn urogram, ana asuea
hU listeners to give up theatrical displuya
in the church and return to practices such
as the Quakers used years ago. "Too
much symbolism weakens faith," Contin
ued the bishop. "Our congregations coma
to our churches an milliners' and tailors'
dummies rather than modestly garbed as
they should be,"
One hundred and sixty-three thousand
dollars still remains to be subscribed bo
fore December 31 In order to secure Mrs.
Russell Sage's offer of I.'iOO.OHO and create
the endowment fund of U,000,0U0 for the
American Bible society. Seventy-four
thousand dollars has been added since the
issue of bulletin No. 6. The largest gift
Included in this sum Is $10,000. Widespread
and growing Interest appears in the sub
scriptions aaily reoelved. A gift haidly
less notable than the one just mentioned is
$T from a missionary In Korea, another tf
gift is from a Grand Army veteran oC
small means In Ohio, who baa been a con
tributor to tbe society since 1849, a church
in the New England states composed of
Armenian Immigrants from Turkey send
U to tbe fund because, aa the pastor re
marks, they know what they owe to the
Iiible society. In answer to a special ap
peal for a Chrlatmas dollar letters front
every state In the union bring gifts front
$1 or U up to 11,000.
The groat Episcopal cathedra on Morn
ingside Heights, New York City, is nearlng
completion faster than most of us Imagine.
For years it has Btood, a magnificent
skeleton, dominating the upper part of the
city, with only the crypt sufficiently far
advanced for services, but now the main
building Is nearly half finished, and 11 is
expectod that service will be hold In It
about Easter time. The choir la quite
finished, except for the reredos, stalls slid
mosaic flooring, and these are being put
In now. The orosslng under the c-niral
dome has been inclosed with temporary
walls until such time as the nave can be
added, and the cathedral is ready to hold,
evon In Its present state, 8,000 iersons a,
larger audience than any other church In
the clt.v, except St. Patrick's cun find room
for. Two of the seven chapili also are
quit finished, and this week It was an
nounced that a third would be given In
memory of the late Bishop Potter. N hen
St. John's Is completed it will rank as
the fourth largest cathedral In the world.
