CATTLE Receipts of cattle were very
light this morning, only seventeen cars
being reported In tiie yards. This was not
enough to make a market. It seemed Uko
a Saturday In the yards. At the same
time there was a very heavy tall of snow
all the morning, making the cattle hardly
presentable to a buyer.. The result waa
that no one a out very early and there
was really not enough business doing to
call it a market.
The receipts nils week have been decidedly
lighter than last, but plenty largo enough
for the week before a holiday. The belter
grades of cattle, Doth beef steers and cow
stuff, have shown some Improvement, and
at the close of the week are around lOif
2oc higher than one week ago.
The best grades of feeders have also
shown some Improvement and they are
quite a little higher than on week ago.
On the other hand, the common and llijht
erades are very slow sellers and weak.

NEW YORK, Dec 24.-Bradstx4f8 to

Holiday trado has occupied the center ot
the stage this week. Shopping everywhere,
except perhaps In part of Uie south, has
been of exceptionally heavy proportions. A
number of clue report a record volume Of
business, and in practically every place
the turu-over greatly exceeds that of 1181.
At the moment Ilia labor situation Is In
comparatively good shape, the switchmen's
strike la practically a thing of ths past and
the tendency among other railway employes
all have prepared requests for lilgner
wages 1 to act conservatively.
Business failures in the United States for

week of 1908. 248 in 1907. 161 In 190 and 212
in 1906. Business failures in Canada for

HOG.l Buyers gave the country a Christ
mas present this morning in the fol"i of a
very substantial advance in hog values.
It will be recalled that the market last
vftk fluctuated quite widely, touching the
lew point of the week on Wednesday.
After that It recovered rapidly, closing the
week only a very little under the cio.-e of
the pievlous week. This week started out
with a decline, recovered a little on Tues
day, and then on Wednesday came the
Worst break experienced ia a long time.
It looked as If no one wanted any more
hogs and the situation was about as dis
couraging for sellers as could well be Im
agined. Thursday's market waa siill lower,
prices dropping to the lowest point touched
In a long lime.
This morning the whole tone of the mar
ket was changed. The trade was a little
slow In getting started, but when It 11.1
make a move the hogs sold In short order,
the forty-three loads In sight changing
hands In no time at all. The pi lc - paid
were 0c higher than yesterday s g n ral
market. A large proportion of the offr
Ings changed hands at $8.10 j3 15, 'w ith gond
weighty hogs on up as iilgli as $8 25. If
compared with yesterday's lower close, tlnj
advance would show a atlll greater gain
lhan that noted above.
Today'B auvance wiped out all of yes
terday's dr-cllno and part of Wednesday's,
leaving the market not far from 20c lower
than the close of last week.

when there Is little demand. Aside from
the sluggish tone to trade, however, th
