The bullish cab ea from Rnenos Ayres
were not confirmed and tracer were In
dined to feel that the wheat market had
advanced too rapidly and p ayed for a re
action. Receipts are only moderate for thin
time of the year, but railroads report a
heavy movement headed for primary mar
ket a.
Receipts of corn are disappointing and
bulla took advantage of tho lisni offerings
to boom prices. Cash corn was a ready
seller at higher valu-a than Saturday.
Wheat had an eaaler tuna from the atari.
Owning- to weak cables, and the desire of
holders to take profits when newa wan re
ported leas bullifh from South American
markets. Cash stuff was weaker on free
orferlnRB on the bulges.
Light receipts and no corn offered on the.
market sent prices higher when the bulla
began biding for future deliveries. Block
ades on the railroads la blamed for the low
recelpta aa country sellng has been more
liberal.
Primary wheat recelpta were 816.000 hush
la and shipments were llfl.OuO bushels,
aralnat receipts last year of WII.UOO bushels
and Hhipmerita of 16,000 bushels.
Primary oorn receipts were 639,000 bushels
nd shipments were 12 000 bushels, against
receipts last year of 1 OW.000 bushel and
shipments of 410,000 bushels.
Clearances were 220.000 bushels of corn,
none of oats and wheat and flour equal to
215.000 bushels.
Liverpool closed VSHd lower on wheat
and unchanged to o lower on corn.

CHICAGO. Dec, 20. The wheat market
teday lost muoh of the gain secured dur
ing the bullish demonstration of last Sat
urday and oloeed with prices o to 2'ti
20 lower than the previous close. Corn
land oats closed strong; and provisions
weak.
Extreme nervousness marked trading In
wheat and prioea moved over a range ot
l-8U4o. During the day December sold
between 1.16 and 1.18. and the May
option between 3X12 and 1.1301.13.
Closing quotations on December were at
11.16W&1.16H. May closed at 1.13. Weak
neaa of foreign markets the Liverpool
market being; off d to d caused a sharp
break here at the opening; initial quota
tions being down from lo to 2c. A. bulge of
2c In corn prompted .eeasidarabte aovertnt
by shorts, whloh caused a substantial -advance
toward midday. An Improved de
mand for cash wheat, light primary re
eeipta and a storm In the northwest also
helped to strengthen the market.
Cold weather caused weaknesa In corn.
but toward the middle of the day urgent
buying by shorts forced prloes up sharply
Prioea closed almost at the top at net
sains of l4o to lo.
Oats were weak at the Start because of
the heaviness of wheat and corn, but
rallied later. An advance of to Ho In
the price of the cash grain helped to
strengthen the options. Prloes closed a
to io higher.
Provisions dosed unchanged to 17 4c
lower.

NEW YORK. Dec. 30 The speculative
hope that the approach of the holidays
would be slsnallxert ny a hrlfk advance in
prices of stocks was disappointed today.
The spotty advance at the outset met sell
ing preasure of such an effective kind that
enthusiasm was chilled.
A factor In this result was the setback
In the Atlantic CoaMt line group of xectir-
Ittes which followed the nutting of denials,
with appearance of authority, of the ru
mors which accompanied last week's ad
vance In those stocks. Another depressing
Influence was the calling of loans on a
large scale by several of the lart:e banks,
which necessitated the replacing of accom
modations. One reason given for this cutl
InK of loans was the appearance of in
creased supplies of commercial pnptr and
the deaire of the banks to provide th'-m-
selves with means to take It.
The 31,500.000 irnld to be shipped to South
America was withdrawn from the sub
treasury during the day. but nniiinwlille
that Institution had contributed more than
32,fW,0O0 to the banka since FrldRV.
The extent of the shilling of loans by
some of the banks gave rise to a conjecture
tr.at any adjustment or accounts mli;ht
be In procreas looking to mergers In the
banking world. Recent operations in con
nection with the purchase of the Equitable
Lire Assurance society and market move
ments In some of the bank stocks has fos
tered fin expectation of such developments.
The reiteration of the report from Purm
that the effort to list United tftntea Steel
on the Bourse had been definitely aban
doned with the dissolution of the syndicate
hich took a block of the stock In connec
tion with the project, weighed on Its price
to some extent. The census burxuu's cot
ton ginning report was held in the cotton
market to confirm the Agricultural depart
ment's serious view of the crop shortage;
h matter of grave Import to Industry and
to the high cost of living. The Dresenta-
tlon of the demands for higher wages by
railway trainmen and conductors In the
east seemed to awaken languid Interest.
American Sugar suffered from the prosecu
tion of the customs frauds.

huei!l Coia weather or oilier unknown
causes have demoralized train service or
late lo such an en,ienl as to luterfere 10 a
considerable exuni with the arrival of
hogs at tiie yards. Thus Saturday none of
ihe Elkhorn trains arrived until laic in the
atteinoon afier the market had closed.
Thev brousht in twenty-elgnt cars, winch
had 10 be held ove- until this morning and
sold on a lower market. Again tnis morn
ing there were none of the Elkhorn trains
reported in, with 110 one knowing whetner
ihey would arrive in time for today's mar
ket or not.
When the market opened there were in
sight about fifty-five cars, including tlioe
carried over from Saturday, with enougu
reported back to bring tne total up lo
about eighty cars should they arrive In
lime. W illi trains late and reports from
other selling points unfavorable buyers
were In no huiry to start out and the
market did not open very early. Buyers
seemed to want to take off about 5u and
'.hey succeeded In buying a good many
hogs that much lower. To quote the gen
eral market 2uc lower would cover the
amount of the decline In most cases on
the early market at least.
Late trains kept bringing In a few hngj
all the mornlr.g, gradually adding to the
receipts, but as a rule lata arrivals old
r.ot meet with as good a reception as the
early, the market beoomlug fuliy 60 lower
than last Saturday.
