CHICAGO, Dec. 13. New high records for wheat and corn for the crop was estab lished here today during a susbion of un usual activity and strength. Vv hunt for December delivery advanced to fl.13 and the May option to $1.11. December coin touched 64c and May, 6ic. Outs and pro visions also scored material advances. There was bullish enthusiasm In the wheat pit from the opening tap of tho gong up to the close and prices moved over a range of lc to 3kic. December displayed the greatest strength and sold between $1.10 nd $1.13. May sold between $l.Ua and .1. July showed less firmness al ttious he best price on that month was 1Q l,jve the previous close. Light stocks, a liberal decrease in the lslble siipply In the United States, un favorable weather' for the movement and the continued advance in com were the fsctors upon which the bulk of the demand wm based. On tho last few trades of the day the price of December dropped back about c from the top, but the market at the close was excited and strong, final figures on December hejng at $1. 12 1.12, ana on May, i.iivijji .1H4. The volume of trading In the corn pit was the largest witnessed In many months and the rrmrket manifested exceptional strength. The range for the day on May was between 66c and 67c. During the last half, December attracted greater attention than May, and advanced from 6lc to 64c. ThS market eloped ut the top, with prices up 2'o2V4c to 3Ve compared with Baturday's final quotations. , Trading In the oats pit was also on an enormous scalo and prices made sharp gains for all deliveries. The market closed strong, with prices c to c above the previous close. Provisions closed strong, with prices up 10c to 57c. The le. dlng f ut ires ranged as follows: Amalgamated Copptr .. U-Reyond the mere cnromoie of the fact of the desultory ad vance in prices of stocks today, there was little of interest In the market. Feeble as me general demand was, there was a fairly comprehensive show of strength by stocks. This was laieelv the sympathatlo effect of disproportionate nuTBiices in a number or special stocks, the most consnlcuous was Hnmih.ii iron which roso to 46, the highest In several years. The recent . entry Into tho Ihlorh di rectorate - of tha dominant flvurea In ih Rock Island property of course came lnt,o rMcnu uiEcusHion in connection with movement. The allegation that Wabash was to be concerned In the llnkinir i two properties, also played a part In the uiBcussion, as it has on former oc casions. A new suggestion wss that the Rock Island preferred stock might be re tired In exchsnae for a hnnri iaana mnA the property put Into the hands of the common stockholders. It Is a peculiarity of ock isiana organization that the pre i.er,. tocl1 wh,cn hut little more than half of tha volume ot tha common trri elects a majority of the directors of the company, besides having prior claims to dividends. This priority will rise to 6 per cent In 1910, and 6 per cent In 1916. The Rock Island company Is a holding com- ti.y, wnicn owns the stock of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific railroad, which In turn issues collateral bonds against th stock held by the Chicago. Rock Island & Pacific railway and until recently, of the t. Louis A San Francisco rallwav. The enormous control thus exercised constitutes s. striking example of the capability of this device for widespread power through the outlay of a minimum of control. The re version of control of the propertv to the tuuiiiion siocanoiders would rectifv the ex cessive centraililng of the present control of the comDanv. The violent advanon In Wumn m.. land securities pointed to another field for "deal" rumors which were left In the rumor Biagc, wunout authentle confirmation. A hardening of discount rates In London and Berlin, the securing by the continent of the London gold supply here modified the ef fect of the New York weekly bank state ment to some extent. Call money touched 6 per cent. Ronds were steady. Total sales par value, $3,778,000. United Slates 2s advanced and the ,2s per cent in the bid prices on call. As has been the case on all daya lately, the poorer material moved slowly and It generally required KKJ16c In ducements to efftct a sale. The proximity of tha holldaya, however. Is proving a good, strong prop to the demand for killers with rinisnea ana Deal muttona commanding prices that were safely steady with last week s close. Some fed yearlings sold arly at $0.00 and ewes changed hands at $4.60. Over half of today's run consisted of stock sheep a ml lambs, mostly iambs. In fact, there were more feeders on sale today than there have ben for some time. What has been said about the fat sheep market Is In many respertj equally true of today s feeder trade. The more suitable kinds met with a ready demand and brought quotably firm prices as a rule, but the me dium kinds were more or less neglected and sold at somewhat lower prices. guntat.ons on fat sr.t-ep and lambs: Qood to choice lamhs, $i .2iVy7.yo; fair to good lambs, $ti.6iu7.2i; good light yearlings. $.35 4(7.00; good heavy .ve.(rllnm, $6.m''Q6.35; good to choice wethers, $&.2ii!6.66; fulr to good wethers, $4.tu6.;!5; good to choice ewes, $4.0i4l5.i5; fair to good ewes, $4,000 4.65. quotations on feeder stock: Oood to choice lambs, $i.2Mi6.76; fair to good lambs, $6.iii'u6.25; light yearlings $5. 005. 50; heavy yearlings, $4.6orl(u.00; old wethers, tiM0 4.75; good to choice ewes, $.1.23.75; breed ing ewes, $1.75410.60; yearling breeding sues, Jo WJiti.00. It would be well for the country to thoroughly understand that the severe break that Is taking place in prices Is due entirely to the large shipments of half fat and unfinished 'cattle which are evidently being rushed Into market to save feed. Until shipments are very much curtailed, there can be very little hope of a better market. The morning wore away without very much business being transacted and It was late In the day before buyers and sellers got together on a trading basis. Just how much lower prices really . were as compared with last week's close Is a difficult matter to say, but It would be safe to call all kinds of killing cattle MQ 15c lower. Some of the best kinds possibly did not show that much decline, while ess desirable kinds showed still more. It was, to say the least, a very unsatisfactory market from start to finish. The supply of feeders was light, and al though the feeling on that kind of cattle would naturally be weak, owing to 'he demoralised condition In the fat cattle branch of the trade, still thers were so few on sale that prices were not very much different from last week's close. Buyers started out bidding prices fully loo lower than Saturday, In fact, In some cases if anything worse, but there was little or no trading on opening bids. It was a fact, however, that buyers really wanted tha hogs and they gradually ralaed their blda until they were about 60 lower than Saturday'a general market, on which basia the bulk of the hoga changed hands. This means that a decent kind of mixed hogs sold largely at $8.30, with good heavy hogs at $8.35 and a top at $8.37. Light hogs sold from $8.30 down.
