NEW YORK. Dec. 11 Th .Hamilton

of the leading clubs of Canada, gave an
exhibition game of Rugby a played in
Carwda, at Van Courtiajidt park Saturday
H7 j afternoon, before the beat American foot

The rule committee of the American
Collegiate Foot Ball association meet In
tht city during Ch net mas week, and It 1
expected that it member, nearly all of
lom witnessed th gam today, will con
rider a revision of th rule, bearing In
mind the rugby game. There seemed to
be a consensu of opinion that the open
pley and entire absence ofma. play In
the rugby game 1 responsible for th few
ate'deet which have resulted. The game
1 divided Into four- cuarter of fifteen
minute each. The team exormnge goals
between cuarter and there was a ten

The first ejuarter. when Hamilton accred
four point to Ottawa' nothing, brought
out many feature of rugby. The gam
wa marked by spectacular kicking by the
backs on both, aide. This and the rul
against mas play led to much open play
ing, which appealed particularly to th
spectators.
The principal element of roughness cornea
In the tackling, which may be done by
one player only, and which because of
the long kick and great run, contribute
a degree of danger. Three of the fourteen
player en each ride are called "scrlm
magers" and they, occupying position di
rectly back of the line of tackle and
guard, known a "wing," do whatever
scrimmaging there 1.
Among the foot ball authorities who cam
to New York te witness the game are
R W. P. Brown, aaslatant coach at Har
vard; Akvnse A. Stagg, athletic director at
the Cntvr!ty of Chicago; Lieutenant Ber
rien, athletic director at Annapolii; lieu
tenant NeDy, athletic dlreetor at Wast
Point; T. W. Marble, Brown university.
Prof. Caffee, Webb academy; Dr. S. B.
Newton, formar head coach at th Uni
versity of Pennsylvania; R. Roe William,
William college; Percy Haughton. Harvard
head coach; Captain "Ted" Coy of the
Tale team, and Walter Camp, th dean ot
foot ball authorltiea.
Mr. Camp's opinion of tba game wa
eagerly sought, bat h said he had not
formed any definite opinion, except that
be believed aaeident would be reduced la
the American game If mass arrlmmact
war eliminated and th Canadian rtyl of
open playtng and free kicking were adopted.
H also approved the rul making It com
pulsory to retire a player even though
lightly injured.
