Deo. 8 -Prices of stocks movt-d upwards again today, with periods of Interruption and hesitation, a final re act'on wiping out much of the gains. The opening rise brought In a considerable vol ume or proilt taking sales from an element In the siwctilatlon which has come to ex pect an alternating current In the price movement from one day to another. The renewed operations on a large scale in I'nlted State Steel on a rllsng scftle hud Important sentimental effect on the gen eral tone Th action of that tock was not explained by any new development, but the Idea persists that the price in dee tlned to rise to par gome time before Christmas. The buying of stocks was accompanied bv profeeslons of satisfaction with the tone of the president' message, which was called moderate and conservative and a warrant ing expectation of circumspect treatment of the topics reserved for future sotclal message. The feeling on the subject was enhanced by advices from Washington al leging the likelihood of the suppression of attempts at radical measures In congress. Published reports of the ripening of plans smong railroad trainmen for a concerted demand upon the railroads for an ad vance in wages after the first of the year were without apparent effect. The census bureau's figures on the amount of cotton ginned to liecember 1 was taken as having a wldoepread Interest outside the actual cotton trade. The rise in price of cotton to the highest price of the season was considered significant of the urevaillna high level of prices In materials. A con trary tendency was shown by the price of copper, one of the few materials which has failed to share in the almost universal rise In prices. The Western Union quar terly report of earnings proved unsatisfac tory to some holders of the stock and the reVntlon of the previous dividend rate seemed to bring some dlspoppointment also. The fall In Amalgamated Copper was an Influence In the sharp reaction late In the day. Bonds wer lrrB-ulsr. Total uIm n.r value. 35. 136.01 0. TTnlteit Rial.. 1. deollned W per cent on call. Trains were very late, as has been the cms for some days back, and less than half of the estimated receipts wsre In sight when the market opened. The day was very far advanced before anything was reported in. The prices paid did not show much change as compared with yesterday, mill It was, if anything, a little stronger, and later on It showed still more strength. It was evident mat packer wanteS the hoes and were disposed to strain a point even in order to secure what they wanted. The hogs sold largely at tS.20 for decent loads, with pretty good kind of mixed hogs going at 88.25 and good heavy hogs on up as high as 2. 30. The top price today SH-M1 is the high est paid so far tola year. The highest price paid ror a tun ioaa or nogs on inn market wa in February, 1SU3, when 28.8,74 was paid. , Representative sales: Kansaa City Live Stock Market. There was a good strong tone to mutton material with finish and moat Bales in this branch of the trade carried figures that looked to be fully steady to a shade higher than yealerday. Among the more notable sales of rang stuff werv. ewe at $6 10, lamb at 87. 06 and yearlings at 84 60. The call for fat lamb 1 becoming more and more urgent with th approach of the holidays.
