Cables were WMk sjraln this morning snd Sentiment van strongly bearish, with iifw from all point favoring the down Bide of the wheat market with the txeeptlon of the receipts In northwestern markets, which are light, owing: to the tleup by the switchmen's strike. Corn values are be'.ng forced lower by heavy selling In anticipation of Increased reoi'.lpts with the return of more favorable weather. Wheat started week on weak cables and entlment was bearish on the general fa vorable crop outlook In, all sections. The market firmed lster on the strength of the cash market and the closing figures ahowed a gain over yesterday. The corn market was very dull and re mained unchanged and was featureless. Cash corn was strong, bringing better f rices fur all grades, owing to the scarc ly of offerings. Receipts have fallen below the requirements and cash stuff In bringing premiums over the option. Primary wheat receipts were 806.000 bushels and shipments were 938, QUO bushels, against receipts last wear of 700,000 bushels and shipments of 1.713.0(H) bushels. Dec, 1 Threatened spread of the swltchmen a strike caused a stampede among aborts In the wheat market today and transformed a previously weak market Into one of decided strength. At the close prices showed net gains for the day of He to o. Corn closed steady, but oat and urovlslona were strong. Possibility that the labor disturbances which have almost completely tied up freight trafflo Id the northwest might be extended to other railroads wag the pre dominating Influence In the wheat pit dur ing the final hour and entirely offset the effect of a number of bearish faotors which had created considerable weakness earlier in the session. Shorts In December were especially eager to even up trades and In their anxiety to cover, bid the price of that option up 1H0 above the low point of the day. This In turn affected the' more dis tant deliveries! although-the July option showed only a moderate upturn. The range on December for the day was between 11.0M4 and 11.06. while May sold between U.OtV and Jl.Oo'4. Final quotations were almost at the top, December being at 11.06 and May at tl.&Vifl.06. Speculative atten tion was diverted from the main current of affairs In the stock market today In sorr.e bye-channels having to do with spe cial developments concerning railroad properties and their relations. The separa te n of the Uock Island and the St. Louis ond Pan Francisco systems has given fc-round, from the first, for supposition tf reodjnstm'-nts to follow, which might In volve momentous consequences to the existing bnlance of relations and control amergnt railroad properties. Today's announcement from the Lehigh Vallev of the coming entry Into its ill- rctorate of the dominnnt powers In the Rock Inland company, afforded light In one direction, which the readjifttment was tak- 1 Ing. The new forces In Lehigh Valley were at some pains to disclaim any' interest in Wabash railroad, which has been In fluenced for several days by an aswumptlo 1 that it was to come Into the plans for the direction of Lehigh Valley. The sup position pointed as on alternative to the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western ss nn eastern outlet for the Hock Island, to be linked by the Wabash. This alternative did not weaken the effect of the Lelilgh Valley transaction owing to the clone banking relations between the new forcas In Lehigh Valley and the Lackawanna element in the old Irfhlgh Valley control. The reports of plans for extension of the Western Maryland reorganized property revived the conjeotures of a possible com pletion of its Unking with the Wabash I'lttsburg for the carrying out of the pro ject for an ocean outlet for the Oould system, supposed at one time to have been abandoned. At the same time a wide field for surmise was offered by the possible recasting of relations to follow the ad question of the St Louis and San Fran cisco as an adjunct to the Hawley hold ings. From this was Inferred a possible resale of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas, lately acquired by the same rapidly grow ing power In the railroad world. The Joint effect of these reports was not stimulating to the market. Considerable effect has been felt already from the preliminary op erations In connection with these develop ments and It is evidently feared that the consequence of the actual accomplishment would be reactionary. The market was affected, as well, by the reduction of demand for the short Interest, which was covered In the rise In prices yesterday. The liability of the call money market to Ylurries under the Influence of continued exports of gold and the require ments of such large transactions as are Involved In the readjustment of the rail mad nwnorshtn hpifets caution In the snecu latlon. The serious effects of the railroad switchmen's strike In the northwest and the fear of Its spread had a depressing effect-Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value. 85,257,000. Receipts were mostly fed sheep of dlf. ferent kinds, there being very few lamb and practically no feeders on sale. Aside from a greater activity In purchasing clr- clea, prices were also strong to some higher than yesterday. A broad test of values, of course, was Impossible, but most strings of fed sheep realized figures that looked easily strong to a dime higher. Sonid toppy fed yearlings sold at 36 40. Fed lambs remained quotably steady, one string of na tives changing hands at 37.60. The live mutton trade during the four days this week leaves current quotations right around lrKyfco higher than at the close of last. Outlet for good fat stuff has at all times been liberal, snd while the fed offerings have not shown as much suitable has sold readily. Lambs have been In a rather limited supply and the average quality none too good. No positive ad vance Is apparent in this branch of the trade, but a good, healthy tone has fea tured Inquiry, and if there has been any change In prices. It hss been In the direc tion of stronger figures. Plenty of orders for stock sheep and lambs are still unfilled In the hands of 00m mission men. Hardly enough feeders have been Included In. the total run this week to make a normal one day's assort ment, euttable classes are still In vigorous request, however, and prices are quotably firm with last Friday. The early market might be described as strong as compared with yesterday s best time, or strong to 60 higher than yesterday's general market. The market, however, was uneven, the trade being more active and stronger In one division than in the other. Thus while the early arrivals generally sold In very good season In one division, as noted above, the trade In the other part of the yards was slow, with sellers generally quoting the bids only about steady with yesterday morning.
