finally resulted in the Judgment of Paris
and the Trojan war.
Eros is triumphing-over Erls ln Douglas
county, for there were 162 licenses to wed
during the month of November and only
thirty decrees of divorce were handed
down by the Judges of district court on the
equity side.
It doth appear perverse that Eros was a
man and Eris a woman. (Certainly the
was "no lady"). For of tne thirty decrees
of divorce the ratio Is 27 to 3 ln favor of
womankind. Twenty-seven wives told their
woes to the court and only three husbands
had complaints to make.
'Perhaps- men are longer suffering," sug
gests Colonel IL H. Claiborne of tho office
of the clerk of district court.
To turn to a happier theme: One hundred
and sixty blushing grooms-to-be entered
the office of License' Clerk Charles Furuy
during the month and seoured permits to
wed. The total number of licenses Issued
was 164, the other two being blushing
brides-to-be, whose future husbands could
not get away to marry them that morning,
but could ln the afternoon.
Douglas county leads the van, having 102
of the brides to Its credit. Twenty were
from Nebraska outside this county, twen
ty-six came from the prairies of Iowa and
sixteen were scattering.

in Address at Banquet of
Economic Club.
NEW YORK, Nov. tO.-Nelson W. Aldrich.
United States senator from Rhode Island
and chairman of the national, monetary
commission, said tonight that the panic of
1907, cost the United States more than $2,-
000,000,000. He made this declaration as he
addressed members of the Economic club
of New York, which was holding its an
nual bi-nquet, with the monetary commis
sion and Ambassadors Henry White and
David Jayne Hill as the guests of honor.
Aa he emphasized the necessity for a
change ln the monetary system of this
country. Senator Aldrich said:
"The disastrous results of that crisis
(the panic of 1907) can never be completely
measured Its destructive Influence were
'elt throughout the world, and the United
States escaped only by yie narrowest
margin, a total collapse of all credit and
the wholesale destruction ot all values."
J. Plerpont Morgan was among the 1,300
persons present at the banquet. Ambas
sadors White and Hill spoke briefly.

lengthy conference at the White house to
day It was said tonight that the adminis
tration will exert all Its Influence towarl
securing a comprehensive revision of th
Interstate Commerce law by the Incoming
congress. A rough draft of the proposed
amendments to the law was submitted by
Attorney General WleVrrsham and while
this was considered In all Its details no de
cision n-lth respect to It was reached.

Interstate Commere commission and Sen
ators Elklns and Cummins.
Frank B. Kellogg, the . speclnl "trust
buster" of the Department of Justice and

Floor Lender Not Selected.
While the president has not yet mad
his selection of the men In the two houses
of congress who will bo entrusted with the
task of putting the legislation through,
there are said to be a large number of can
didates anxious for the honor of appear
ing as champions of the White house.
Senator Elklnstoday renewed his sug
gestions that the best way to encourage
Amerlcnn shipping would be to enact a
law giving a reduction ot 5 per cent In
customs duties on all Imported goods
brought Into the United States In Amer
ican bottoms.
"This would not only build up Amer
ican shipping, but would be a reduction
downward In duties," said Senator Elklns.
The president Is preparing his recom
mendations favoring ship subsidy legisla
tion and Senator Elklns wished . to lay
his project- before him before that 'para
graph of the message to congress was
completed. ,'

change from his Intentions of a few
weeks ago. Is largely based upon the
fact that there are pending ln the supreme
court and on their way to that tribunal
a number of Important cases Involving In
terpretation of the act.
H feels, he says, that apeclflc recom
mendations from him at this time might
be construed as an attempt to Influence
the court. ,
