FOE PACIFIC COAST EXTENSION All Are Moilrla In Driln and Are Writ Protected Aajalaat Danger at CnllMlon Buffet Cars Arc Beaut lea. That the Pacific coast extension of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railway will be well equipped with rolling stock lit the passenger aervlce Is evident from an order recently filled by the Harney A Smith Car company. This equipment con sists of ten baggage, mall and express ran, fifteen day coaches and two buffet library cars. The frames and under frames are of the strongest structural steel The cars are all built along the same general lines. They are seventy-two feet eight Inches lung , ever the end sills, and ten feet wide over the frames. The buffet cars are divided Into two rooms with the buffet between them. The smal'er of the two rooms Is the lounging room, tha larger Is the library or readmg room. The former Is finished In dark woods with subdued lighting and color effects; the latter. In lighter tones with brilliant coloring. The Interior finish of the lounging room Is done In a dark wood, a native to Peru, where It Is known as 'Qu!taralcon." The builders, who have used the wood for several years, have riven It the name of "Peruvian mahogany." It la finely figured and takes a perfect polish. .The Intoilur finish of the library end la In Cubaa ' mahogany, exquisitely marked. Delicately executed designs In Marquetry of ran woods characterises the whole of the Interior. All of the Marquetry has had the special Barney A Smith treat ment to preserve the natural color of the woods. No Sharp Corners. One of the noticeable features of the Interior Is the entire absence of square or angular corners In the library rooms. All of the windows stop at the chair rail line and the result is an Impression of bulk and strength on the exterior and altitude and space on the interior. The aictroti,.... are specially designed to suit iha theme and are finished In statuary bronte ! The carpets are of the best Wilton. The chairs, sofas and coxy corners are uphol- stered In Spanish leather In shades i I match the color schemes of the rooms sev erally. The antl-telescoplng device la exception ally well constructed so as to withstand to the maximum the force of collision. The end framing and antl-tekscoplng ar rangement Is composed of eight four-inch Z bars at each end of the car, the lower ends extending down Into pockets cast In the steel platform and riveted to the end sill sections. The upper end of each of these Z bars has the web. out out and the Inner flange pressed back even with the outer flange and both flanges are riveted to a pressed steel end plate, which In turn is securely connected to the side plates and roof framing of the car. The side framing consists of three-sixteenths Inch pressed steel channel-shaped posts run ning from the side elates to tha hn.t., ,of the side trusses. Kach of these tx.st. extends the full depth of the side truss and has a large Inner flange at this point, which provides an extremely largo surface for securely riveting the post In poslttou.
