The last week has been full. Indeed, but In striking contrast to the usual order of i things at this time of year. The older members of society have been the active ones nnd the younger set has been con spicuously ouiet. This Is explained by the ptesence of several out-of-town guests in the married set and the fact that several of the youiu women are out of town en joying themselves elsewhere. The charity hall at Fort Crook Friday evening will be the prominent event of the week and a number of guests from Omaha are planning to attend. The ball Is for the benefit of the Army Relief ao clcty and for the Creche of Omaha. An Interesting feature of the ball will be the minuet dunced by eight officers In full dress uniforms and eight women from the post. NF.VV YORK, Nov. 20,-"We have had nothing to do either directly or Indirectly with the combination of the American Tel ephone and Telegraph company with the Westtrn Fnlon Telegraph company." said Clarence II. Mackey, president of the Pos tal Telegraph company, today. "We have not wished to Join It. and have not been Invited to Join It. There have been no negotiations whatsoever with us In regard to the matter and there Is every reason why we should not have had any thing to do with It. We knew nothing about It until the day when It waa pub licly announced. "It Is true that we own a large block of Btoek of the American Telephone and Tel egraph company, but that Is one of our many Investments. We never have had and have not now any representation on the board of that company, and our stock is not consulted or considered any more than the slook of any other stockholder, as you will aee from the fact that we knew nothing about this deal until it was pub licly announced. "The statement that Mr. William II. Baker represented us Is Incorrect. He does not represent us In anything In the slight est degree. Neither hava wa had anything to do with purchases of telephone com panies In the middle west. Our company Is slow and conservative in its Invest ments but swift and aggressive In its service. We are not dsturbed In any way. We have successfully met hard competition for over twenty-five years and have pros pered and are in first class financial con dition; better than ever before. We have waited until this matter had simmered down so that we could make one statement covering the whole subject. As I mated several weeks ago competition will con tinue and It will be real competition the came ns heretofore." Canada of the I'nlon Pacific have rc- fiom Leavenworth, where they landed the Overland Limited mail bandits In the federal penitentiary. The convicted men were not very talk ative on the load down from Omaha, ex cept to say that had they been able to se cure other witnesses who had promise 1 to be on hand to help them In their nllbls they wculd have bepn acquitted. D. W. Woods, who has been the humorist of the party, seemed to realize that his future was hopeless and had lost much of his good humor end really look the matter more seriously than the otheis. They had .ii Utile to say, and talked but li 1 1 To of the crime of which they had been con victed. Kven Fred Torgenson, who had up to this time been the most stoical one of the five, said when crossing the Mis souri river bridge at Fast Leavenworth: "I wouldn't want to see anybody hurt, but 1 wish this whole train would go through this bridge and that I would be at the bottom of the wreck." Arriving at the pi ison about 4 M in the afternoon, the five men were formally turned over to the prison authorities. Theie was but little ceremony In the pro ceedings. The men were ordered to get In line to have their pictures taken. Orlg ware, dated and broken by the situation, was a little slow and was pushed Into the line by a burly prison guard with the sharp admonition: "Get In line, there. You have got to do as you are told here." The prisoners were then photographed In the clothes in which they eame to the prison, and were afterwards searched and given their prison suits on which was stamped their prison number, by which they will be ever known hereafter, and were again photographed. Woods and Matthews remarked to the officers while going to Leavenworth that they Intended to be good prisoners and earn every credit they could. o Socialists for City Ownership Unexpected Strength Shown by Them in the Traction Con test. (From a Staff C-orrespondent.) DES MOINKS. Nov. 20Speclal Tele gram.) The unexpected show of strength on the purt of local socialists for their pro gram of compelling the city council to aub I mit to the voters a plan for municipal j ow nership of the street railway adds com I plications to an interesting situation. The I franchise of the present company Is in litigation and when an effort was made to sell, the terms offered were rejected by i the council. An agreement has been made as to submitting to the voters a new fran chise. Now the socialists have taken the lead In a movement for municipal owner ship and are circulating a petition to force a vote, and It is certain they will succeed. They will also compel a vote on a plan to force the present company to pay over a large amount of money said to be due on the old franchise. Although the late Edward Kntwistle, engineer on the first railroad train in Kng land? left but a very small estate, his will is to be contested. Three daughters and two grandchildren claim that his signatuie was obtained by undue influence In favor of George Futwiatle, Willi whom he had lived for a long time.
