NEW YORK, Nov. lfi. The upturn
pi Ices of stocks In today's market had
Incentive In the grtajlr strengthened
position of the banks disclosed bv the
bank statement on Saturday and in tits
corroborative evidence of the rumors of
a coming copper combination emhtacllnir
most of the world's great producers and
sellers of that metal.
The action of the copper securities was
In Itself strongly confirmatory of these
rumors and the continuance of conferences
amongst the leading Interests concerned
pointed to the same conclusion. The alms
of the new combination were supposed to
Include a centralisation of control of the
sale of copper, some restriction of produc
tion and an increase In price which. It was
asserted, would be moderate and coupl"
rvith It restraint on the advancing as well
as declining tendency of the price.
The enormous proIts reallred out of the
United States Steel corporation organi
sation by the stockholders In the consti
tuent company In that formation was
cited as a possible precedent. The leader
ship of the market swung Into the copper
industrial and there was excited specu
lation In them, not only on the stock ex
change, but In outside markets. A power
ful combination to hold up the price of
copper was looked to hopefully to bring
numerous copper properties Into the range
of profitable operations.
The general markut was not at first In
clined to follow tho movement in the
coppers with any enthusiasm. The Gould
stocks were consplcious as u group and
conjecture continues busy over tlie Mis
souri Pacific financial plan, which was
reported to contemplate a mortgage bond
with a convertible feature end posslhlva
subscription privilege for stock holders.
The contraction of nearly 140,000.000 In the
loan account of the clearing house banks
last week and the small disturbance In the
stock market Involved point to other Im
portant sources of relief. Reports that
French funds were placed here met with
divided acceptance. Attention turns to the
scaling down of over rJO.OuO.OOO in the de
posits of nonclearing house institutions, ac
companied by an actual increase in loans.
It 18 known that large loans were placed
In Wall street last week by Important
private banking houses bearing close rela
tions with the largest corporations,
violent break in American Sugar was

activities of the public prosecuting

CATILEJ-Hecelpts of cattle were very
liberal this moiiung, 330 cars being re
ported In. The quality of the receipts was
very poor, the arrivals consisting almost
entirely of trash, with hardly more than a
sprinkling of desirable loads of any kind.
Early advices from Chicago Indicated a
lower market at that point and buyers
were Inclined to point to that fact, but
there were so few desirable killers here
that the local market on cattle of that de
scription was strong. On the other hand.
Inferior cattle and trash of all kinds was
slow; and the feeling rather weak.
Cows and heifers of fair to good quality
moved off quite freely at good, steady to
strong price, with common .kind xuostly
steady.
Feeders were anywhore from steady to
10c higher; that Is, the desirable kinds
were, and the msrket fairly active at pre
vailing figures. The fact ia the feeder
market Is very strong every day and un
usually high for this season of the year.

HOGS Receipts of hogs were extremely
light this morning and, as some of ihe
trains were late in arriving at the yards,
there were at no time enough hogs on

sold about as fast as they put in an ap
