A good looking young woman followed
oy a young man who evidently took a
great deal of pride In her appearance
wandered Into the restaurant early before
there was mujh of a crowd there. They
steered for a table off In one corner.
He helped her off with her coat carefully
and with an air of being willing to protect
her against the world In general.
When she took off her glove It was seen
that a new pUin band of gold encircled
the significant third finger of the left hand.
Then he handed her the bill of fare and
they chose their eatable with a great deal
of deliberation, deferring each to the other
In the selection, with a tenderness and
delicacy that sometime is considered
characteristic of the early stage of matri
mony. '
The orchestra started up, playing Its first
number of the evening. There weren't many
folk in the restaurant then, as has been
said, and when the two young folks, Just
naturally pleased with everything, ap
plauded the selection, the leader turned to
smile and bow toward them. This seemed
to give the young woman an Idea. She
leaned over and whispered to her com
panion.
A she did so one of her hani was
placed In th middle of t-.s tablecloth.
For answer he smiled fondly and then
reached over and squeezed her hand. Then
he called the waiter.
He tore a little piece off an envelope,
wrote something on It and told the waiter
to carry It to the orchestra leader. It
tt'M plain that he gave thla Instruction, be
cause the waiter walked over with It.
The leader read the paper, smiled very
broadly and passed the slip to on of the
violinists. The latter grinned and was
about to pas It on when he caught the
eye of the young man, who obviously
wasn't at all pleased with the exhibition
that was being made of his note. The
violinist tosHed the piece of paper on the
floor and then bent over to search through
a pile of music. He got the pieces he was
after and distributed them to the other
member of the orchestra, who put them
underneath the regular second selection,
tor which they were tuning up.
Meantime the restaurant was filling up,
so that by the time the second piece was
done with nearly all the tables were oc
oupled. Those In th near neighborhood
of the young couple were taken, too. Then
the orchestra, after the usual pause, began
to tune np for the special selection. Th
leader put up th "By Request" sign and
theu tapped on the rack before him.

ant which late In th night, or rather early
in the morning, Isn't Just th quietest place
on earth, and some of the diners belonged
to the all night class, just dropped In for
breakfast.
There wa a broad smile on the face o
some and there was a general search for
the person or person who might hnv
asked for that selection. Th foung folks,
who didn't count on attracting so much
attention, kept their face turned toward
their plate and ate with Intern- Interest
in their food.
It 1 the custom for those who call for
a selection to applaud the conclusion o
the same, but these two did nothing of
the sort. By this time both were rather
red In the face. The orevheetra leader,
huwtver, was not to be cheated of hi
acknowledgment.
When the selection wa through with
he waited for a moment, as if for th
applause, but It did not come from th
young folks, Ba the leader, with a mall
clous Inspiration, turned In their direction
and paused until the young man with
guilty feeling that aom on was staring
at him looked up. Then th leader bowed
deeply.
Of course every one else In the place fol
lowed the direction of that Inclination ot
the head, and the secret was out. There
were more smllea and even some laugh:
while the color could be seen mounttn
swiftly up the neck of the young woman
a sh remained bent over her plat.
"Gee, that' a pair of honeymoner for
fair," said one man to hi table companion
another man, as they looked toward the
young folks.

loans by one of th largest national bank
caused an advance to i'4 per cent In the
rate for call loans on the Stock exchange
thla afternoon. It Is understood large
shipment of cash were made to Chicago
today, where the money will be used to
strengthen the reserve of th national
bank of that city In anticipation of an
arly call by th comptroller of tbv currency.
